{"id":51766,"date":"2012-01-13T16:04:45","date_gmt":"2012-01-13T21:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=51766"},"modified":"2018-10-01T13:35:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-01T17:35:32","slug":"arab-news-nasser-danforth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2012\/01\/13\/arab-news-nasser-danforth\/","title":{"rendered":"Arab News highlights new Short Term course heading to Saudi Arabia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An op-ed in the English-language newspaper <em>Arab News<\/em>\u00a0praises Leena Nasser &#8217;12, the Bates student who has helped to craft an anthropology course scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia in May.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51793\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/nasser_1235.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51793\" class=\"wp-image-51793\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/nasser_1235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/nasser_1235.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/nasser_1235-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-51793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leena Nasser &#8217;12 is a politics major from Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/arabnews.com\/opinion\/columns\/article560430.ece\">An essay by Abdullah Al-Alami,<\/a> a Saudi writer, economist and NGO activist, describes the email he received from Nasser, a politics major from Dhahran.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She said she has a dream, simply put, to plan a short trip for students to Saudi Arabia,&#8221; Al-Alami writes.<\/p>\n<p>The Short Term course, developed cooperatively by Nasser and Loring &#8220;Danny&#8221; Danforth, Dana Professor of Anthropology, will be the college&#8217;s first to involve significant coursework in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>And as is typical with Short Term courses that go abroad, Danforth and his students will do intensive background studies on campus before traveling to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>In country, Danforth and his students will visit Dhahran, Riyadh and Jeddah. They will investigate the impact of modernization on traditional Saudi society, the role of oil in the country&#8217;s economic development, the impact of Islam on Saudi culture and the position of women in Saudi society.<\/p>\n<p>Nasser has been instrumental in planning the course, says Stephen Sawyer, director off-campus study at Bates.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51792\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/danforth_8a6455090c_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51792\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/danforth_8a6455090c_web-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/danforth_8a6455090c_web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/01\/danforth_8a6455090c_web.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-51792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loring &#8220;Danny&#8221; Danforth, Dana Professor of Anthropology<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Adds Danforth, &#8220;Leena&#8217;s contribution to planning this course has been invaluable.
