{"id":52865,"date":"2012-03-12T13:31:39","date_gmt":"2012-03-12T17:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=52865"},"modified":"2018-10-03T13:55:35","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T17:55:35","slug":"calcbench-rapp-ghai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2012\/03\/12\/calcbench-rapp-ghai\/","title":{"rendered":"CFO.com touts prize-winning app by classmates Rapp and Ghai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reporter David Rosenbaum of<em> CFO.com<\/em> highlights the prize-winning open-source financial application created by Pranav Ghai &#8217;93 and Alex Rapp &#8217;93.<\/p>\n<p>The app, known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calcbench.com\">Calcbench<\/a>, recently won the $20,000 grand prize in the XBRL Challenge, a contest to build an application using SEC filing data, which is formatted to the XBRL standard (&#8220;eXtensible Business Reporting Language).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Calcbench is truly a &#8220;handy-dandy calculator,&#8221; Rosenbaum writes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52871\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/03\/pranav.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52871\" class=\"wp-image-52871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/03\/pranav.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-52871\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pranav Ghai &#8217;93, co-founder of Calcbench.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By typing a company&#8217;s ticker symbol into the browser-based calculator, a user sees a firm&#8217;s SEC filing information. When a user clicks on any number, the calculator displays changes over time in various financial categories, such as inventory or accounts payable. A user can also compare those results between companies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The quickest and easiest way to work with SEC filing data.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year, Ghai and Rapp gave their 140-character description of Calcbench to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/bizspark_featured_startups\/archive\/2012\/01\/26\/bizspark-startup-of-the-day-calcbench.aspx\">BizSpark, a Microsoft initiative to support software startups: <\/a>Calcbench is &#8220;a free online platform to retrieve, analyze and share public financial data. The quickest and easiest way to work with SEC filing data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rapp tells CFO.com that he and Ghai believe that the tool could give CFOs &#8220;a clearer view of how their filings will look to the investor community, as well as enabling them to more easily benchmark suppliers or partners.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52870\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/03\/alex.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52870\" class=\"wp-image-52870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/03\/alex.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-52870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alex Rapp &#8217;93, co-founder of Calcbench.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The startup is based at Dogpatch Labs, a venture-funded incubator for tech startups with labs in Cambridge, Mass., and New York City, as well as Palo Alto, Calif., and Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>Ghai, based in New York, and Rapp, in Cambridge, have access to the labs in both cities (&#8220;though Alex uses it MUCH more than I do,&#8221; Ghai says) and they use Skype too.<\/p>\n<p>Communications technology has been key. &#8220;We probably couldn&#8217;t have done this [startup] as efficiently five or ten years ago,&#8221; Ghai says.<\/p>\n<p>Their both Bates math majors. Ghai, the team&#8217;s systems and quantitative expert, earned a master&#8217;s degree in applied mathematics from New York University and has extensive experience in the financial services field as an analyst and consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Rapp, the strategist, earned an M.B.A. at Boston University.
