Photograph by Simone Schriger &#8217;14.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>A sampling of advice from the \u201cConference for Black &amp; Latino Men from Colby, Bates and Bowdoin Colleges\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Opening address by David Wall Rice<\/h3>\n<p>Rice is professor of psychology at Morehouse College and leader of that school\u2019s Identity Orchestration Research Lab.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cStep outside the stereotypes and complicate the picture: Be your own man, utilize immediate democratic space, assume responsibility and accountability.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBe successful in meaningful, life-affirming, community-building ways.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t just whistle Vivaldi,&#8221; a metaphor for embracing cultural preferences that please majority groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Alumni Panel<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Robb Brown<\/strong>, Bates \u201992, founder and principal owner of the Denver Retail Group real estate brokerage; member, African American Leadership Institute: \u201cFind the opportunity where there appears not to be opportunity, and maximize the opportunity.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hajmil Carr<\/strong>, Bowdoin \u201900, founder, Novaya Mortgage, largest mortgage company in New England; and Trueline Publishing, publisher of trade journals throughout the U.S. and Canada: \u201cAre you a winner? Do you act like a winner? Show intellectual capacity.\u00a0 Confidence is so critical.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jay Scott-Harris<\/strong>, Colby \u201998, vice president and legal product specialist, Putnam Investments; writing coach and mentor for students through Citizen Schools of Boston: \u201cUse your liberal arts education, which teaches you how to deal with a range of different subjects and how to communicate well \u2014 on paper, in person, electronically, every way you can.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Faculty Panel<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Joseph Atkins<\/strong>, visiting assistant professor of psychology and coordinator of multicultural student programs, Colby College: \u201cFind a personal mentor, an adviser, and listen to them carefully.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tashia Bradley<\/strong>, associate dean of students at Colby: \u201cTake an hour a week to do something you wouldn\u2019t do in the course of your normal schedule. Broaden yourself.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marcus Bruce<\/strong>, a 1977 graduate of Bates who is now the college\u2019s Benjamin E. Mays Professor of Religious Studies: \u201cYou have a calling,\u201d he said. \u201cFind it and build on it.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brian Purnell<\/strong>, assistant professor of Africana studies, Bowdoin College: \u201cBe on time.\u00a0 Sit in the front of the class.\u00a0 Speak up in class. Pester your professors. Carve out time for academic life.\u00a0 Start your work early.\u00a0 Read a good newspaper every day.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Concluding address by Ozzie Jones \u201992<\/h3>\n<p>Jones is a stage and film writer and director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Society] may not love the kids who haven&#8217;t gotten a chance, but they love the guys who have made it to Bates and places like it.
