{"id":55777,"date":"2012-06-18T11:28:57","date_gmt":"2012-06-18T15:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=55777"},"modified":"2018-06-04T09:21:06","modified_gmt":"2018-06-04T13:21:06","slug":"lynch-89","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2012\/06\/18\/lynch-89\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthropologist Lynch &#8217;89 examines one elderly workforce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Attracting media attention is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/retirementontheline.net\/\">Retirement on the Line<\/a>,<\/em> a book from cultural anthropologist Caitrin Lynch &#8217;89 examining the elderly workforce at Vita Needle Co. in Needham, Mass., where the median age is 73.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55779\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/06\/retirement-on-line-lynch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55779\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/06\/retirement-on-line-lynch-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/06\/retirement-on-line-lynch-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/06\/retirement-on-line-lynch-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/06\/retirement-on-line-lynch.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-55779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cultural anthropologist Caitrin Lynch &#039;89 is the author of Retirement on the Line.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lynch, an associate professor of anthropology at Olin College, tells <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/articles.boston.com\/2012-03-31\/business\/31281861_1_older-workers-needles-workforce\/\">The Boston Globe<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>that for many Americans getting old is like a vanishing act.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People don\u2019t even look at them, and if they do look at them, they look at them with pity,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>But work, Lynch tells <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/juliamoulden.com\/pulse-no-12-keep-on-truckin\/\">blogger Julia Moulden,<\/a><\/strong> can provide an &#8220;oasis of meaning for older adults.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She tells <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wamc.org\/post\/retirement-line\"><em>The Roundtable<\/em> of Northeast Public Radio<\/a><\/strong> that leisure activities are rewarding for the elderly, but a job provides something different, the feeling that someone is looking for them &#8220;to arrive and contribute.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She spent five years studying Vita Needle, the maker of stainless steel needles and tubing, including one summer doing a variety of jobs on the production floor.<\/p>\n<p>Lynch tells <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarp.org\/work\/working-after-retirement\/info-05-2012\/audio-retirement-on-the-line.html\">AARP&#8217;s Prime Time Radio<\/a><\/strong> that anthropological research of this sort illuminates &#8220;the meaning and context of work for different people \u2014 the economic, social and psychological values. What is it people are seeking? What are their values?
