{"id":5687,"date":"2008-07-28T12:00:57","date_gmt":"2008-07-28T16:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/explorebates.wordpress.com\/?p=214"},"modified":"2017-01-26T14:45:49","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T19:45:49","slug":"scofield-shuey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2008\/07\/28\/scofield-shuey\/","title":{"rendered":"Bates Dance Festival presents Maine premiere by Scofield &amp; Shuey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/Images\/72BDFZoeJuniper4.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"410\" height=\"154\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bates Dance Festival presents Zoe Scofield &amp; Juniper Shuey (Photo by Bianca Benson).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Known for introducing audiences to America&#8217;s most promising talents, the <a href=\"http:\/\/abacus.bates.edu\/dancefest\/\" target=\"_parent\">Bates Dance Festival<\/a> presents <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoe_Scofield\" target=\"_parent\">Zoe Scofield<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juniper_Shuey\" target=\"_parent\">Juniper Shuey<\/a>, Seattle-based conceptual artists who perform the Maine premiere of <em>the devil you know is better than the devil you don&#8217;t<\/em> at 8 p.m. Friday and\u00a0 Saturday, Aug. 1 and 2, in Schaeffer Theatre, 365  College St., Bates College. Tickets are $20\/$12 (students and seniors)  and may be purchased by calling 207-786-6161 after July 7.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Scofield and Shuey\u2019s latest collaboration is part of a long-term project exploring adolescent group dynamics: how and why people fall into or push each other into the roles of &#8220;Leader,&#8221; &#8220;Follower&#8221; and &#8220;Outcast.&#8221; Their work is known for its mesmerizing intensity, technical precision and lush design, incorporating video projection and naturalistic environments. Scofield dances with a predatory determination. Combining the poise  of ballet with the distortions of butoh, the dancing juxtaposes  restrained wildness and delicate fury. <em>the devil\u2026<\/em> creates a world of strange beauty with seductive visual imagery and a haunting, post-minimalist score by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morgan_Henderson\" target=\"_parent\">Morgan Henderson<\/a> that rivals the best movie soundtracks.<\/p>\n<p>Scofield studied ballet and choreography at Walnut Hill School of  Arts and Boston Conservatory before joining Prometheus Dance and Bill  James Atlas Dance Company. Since moving to Seattle her work has been  shown at On the Boards, Jacob\u2019s Pillow Inside\/Out, Bumbershoot, MOVE!,  Ten Tiny Dances, The Southern Theater, ODC Theater and Velocity Theater.  Scofield and Shuey recently received a commission from the Frye Art  Museum and Spectrum Dance Theater. They received a prestigious 2007  National Dance Project award for the creation of <em>the devil\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shuey is a video installation and sculptural performance artist based  in Seattle. Since 1999 he has been working professionally, exhibiting  his work both locally and abroad. His work has been featured in solo  exhibitions at the Howard House (2005), Tacoma Art Museum\u2019s Northwest  Biennial (2004, 2006), and &#8220;Fashion is Art,&#8221; curated by Thread (2003).  He has received several awards, including the \u201cCurators Choice Award\u201d  from the Tacoma Art Museum\u2019s Northwest Biennial in 2004, the \u201cPeople&#8217;s  Choice Award\u201d from the Bellevue Art Museum\u2019s Northwest Annual in 2001  and the Lambdha Rho Art Honorary from the University of Washington  School of Art in 2000. Juniper came to the visual arts from a theater  background. He spent three years at Emerson College in Boston studying  theatrical set design.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan Henderson is a member of the Seattle-based bands, The Blood  Brothers, YKK, Sharks Keep Moving, Ghost Wars and As O, Hunter. With the  Blood Brothers, Morgan has released seven albums and toured  internationally. He has been collaborating with Scofield and Shuey since  2005. Their last work, <em>there ain\u2019t no easy way out,<\/em> premiered  at On the Boards as part of their Northwest Artist Series in 2006 and  subsequently toured to Jacob\u2019s Pillow.
