Motivational speaker Kirk Nugent.<\/p><\/div>\n

Kirk Nugent, a poet and prominent motivational speaker, facilitates a Bates symposium on March 2 that will show students how knowledge about identity and difference can be put into practice in the workaday world.<\/p>\n

Beyond Intellectual Profit: Using Classroom Knowledge in the Workplace<\/em> takes place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, in Rooms 221-222 of New Commons, 136 Central Ave. The public is invited to attend at no cost.<\/p>\n

Other symposium presenters include Bates alumni; Bates staff; and representatives from local businesses and nonprofits. The symposium comprises four discussions: a panel about how employers deal with difference in the workplace; a lunchtime session about connections between coursework and the workplace; a look at how theoretical concepts inform professional work; and a panel with Bates staff describing how they integrate discussions of difference into their jobs.<\/p>\n

Nugent<\/a><\/strong>, an award-winning poet, is known for advancing the ideal that all individuals are united by the right to chase their dreams, and for challenging preconceived notions about success and self-actualization.<\/p>\n

Nugent started public speaking as a poet, in venues where he delivered incisive views about social and political issues with infectious wit and frenetic energy. He has spoken across the United States, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

Supporting his public presentations, Nugent has written the books The Unpopular Truth<\/em> and I Need You to Remember<\/em>, and produced the CD set Pursue Your Passion<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
