Why does she jump?<\/p>\n<p>The woman in the painting is indeed her, Sophy Min &#8217;12 says, \u201cbut it should be open to interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a junior semester in Florence on a Syracuse University program, Min, an economics and studio art double major, won best in show for this oil painting, <em>The Lady and the Ladder<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62332\" style=\"width: 372px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/C9-sophy-min-FULL-artwork_6664.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62332\" class=\"size-large wp-image-62332\" title=\"C9- sophy min FULL artwork_6664\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/C9-sophy-min-FULL-artwork_6664-362x500.jpg\" width=\"362\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/C9-sophy-min-FULL-artwork_6664-362x500.jpg 362w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/C9-sophy-min-FULL-artwork_6664-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/C9-sophy-min-FULL-artwork_6664.jpg 784w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-62332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During a junior semester in Florence on a Syracuse University program, Sophy Min &#8217;12 won best in show for this oil painting, The Lady and the Ladder.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a Myanmar citizen moving through Italy and Europe, Min had to travel carefully, and was subject to racial profiling by border authorities, sometimes mistaken for a Chinese citizen traveling illegally.<\/p>\n<p>In the painting, the Lady\u2019s face is hidden \u2014 \u201cas an artist I do not want to tell viewers who this is\u201d \u2014 as she seems to advance slowly, rung by rung. She has to hike her native skirt, called a longyi, which is unsuited for climbing because it\u2019s worn snugly by pulling the fabric to one side, then folding and tucking into the opposite side.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I want her to be jubilant.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the Lady pulls up the skirt, she shows some of her leg. That\u2019s still unusual in a country emerging from a 48-year military dictatorship. The Lady\u2019s hair is a bit out of place. And she\u2019s not wearing shoes. \u201cBut if she had been,\u201d Min says, \u201cI would\u2019ve made her lose one shoe by the top, to show a struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the top, the Lady jumps for joy. \u201cIt was a question for me,\u201d Min admits. \u201cHow do I celebrate? I want her to be jubilant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A friend served as the jump model, leaping happily over and over with Min taking pictures of each leap. \u201cI knew what I wanted but it was hard getting it just right.\u201d \u2014<em> HJB<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Arts &amp; Culture Facts<\/h3>\n<p>A cool exhibition on astrophotography is at the Museum of Art through Dec. 15, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Current student bands include Almost Awkward and AndroSkaggin.<\/p>\n<p>Lecturer Robert Feintuch showed his paintings at the Akira Ikeda Gallery, Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>The dance program \u201cwent major\u201d in 20II, and the first Bates dance majors just graduated.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Giving Voice<\/h3>\n<p>The specialty of teaching voice and speech requires a nuanced understanding of both the anatomy of the voice and the art of using it to establish character.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62287\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/120118-Vecsey_5645.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62287\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-62287\" title=\"120118-Vecsey_5645.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/120118-Vecsey_5645-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/120118-Vecsey_5645-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/120118-Vecsey_5645-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/120118-Vecsey_5645.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-62287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katalin Vecsey, senior lecturer in theater, photographed by Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For instance, \u201can Irishman who has lived in the U.S. for many years and was educated at Harvard will speak differently from an Irishman who has never left Ireland,\u201d says Katalin Vecsey, senior lecturer in theater who has taught at Bates since 1996.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winner of the Kroepsch teaching award, Vecsey moved to the U.S. from her native Hungary in 1995, but remains close to that nation professionally and otherwise. She maintains a residence in Budapest and stays close to the Hungarian theater community.<\/p>\n<p>Bates students profit from that proximity. Seven times since 1999, during Short Term, Vecsey and Dana Professor Theater Martin Andrucki have brought students to Hungary and the Czech Republic to study theater and film.<\/p>\n<p>The worth of the experience derives in part from the fact that repertory theater is much more common in Hungary than in the U.S. Many companies \u201chave eight, 10, 15 plays in repertoire, and run those shows as long as there is audience interest,\u201d Vecsey says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne night they might play <em>Hamlet<\/em>, and the next a Beckett show, and then a Pinter play,\u201d Vecsey says. \u201cThe actors have to know the texts and the blocking for each production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the Bates students, \u201cthe most valuable experience is that they can go on different nights to the same theater and see the same actor in several roles. And see how adaptable actors are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne night they might play Hamlet, and the next a Beckett show, and then a Pinter play.\u201d <em>\u2014 DLH<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Easing Up on the Easel<\/h3>\n<p>One thing Caroline Sheridan \u201912 learned about her art in 2011\u201312 is that less is sometimes more.
