Harry Rowe, Class of 1912, was ahead of that game when he launched the magazine of Bates 91 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>In the magazine\u2019s first issue, managing editor Rowe presented the college magazine \u201cwith some trepidation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He felt that way because, as he wrote, \u201cthere is no way of knowing what alumni want\u201d in a magazine until readers see and react to the first one.<\/p>\n<p>So in that first issue, Rowe extended an unpretentious invitation to join the discussion of all things Bates. With \u201csuggestion and constructive criticism\u201d in the Bates fashion, Rowe knew that the magazine would evolve over time (though he may not have anticipated a yellow cover).<\/p>\n<p>As shown by 91 years of covers, the mag\u2019s look and feel has certainly changed. Yet the reader\u2019s main interest \u2014 what\u2019s going on at Bates \u2014 hasn\u2019t. The Bates women\u2019s athletics motto \u2014 \u201ca sport for every girl and every girl in a sport\u201d \u2014 reflected the national reaction to the era\u2019s professionalized and exclusive sports culture.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Pete&#8217;s Prize<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/G2-Trophy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-62881 alignright\" alt=\"G2 - Trophy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/G2-Trophy-165x500.jpg\" width=\"165\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a>Meredith \u201cPete\u201d Burrill \u201925 won the Garcelon Cup for hurdles in 1922.
