\u2018With Some Trepidation\u2019<\/p>\n

Heard a lot about \u201cjoining the conversation\u201d? Harry Rowe, Class of 1912, was ahead of that game when he launched the magazine of Bates 91 years ago.<\/p>\n

In the magazine\u2019s first issue, managing editor Rowe presented the college magazine \u201cwith some trepidation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He felt that way because, as he wrote, \u201cthere is no way of knowing what alumni want\u201d in a magazine until readers see and react to the first one.<\/p>\n

So in that first issue, Rowe extended an unpretentious invitation to join the discussion of all things Bates. With \u201csuggestion and constructive criticism\u201d in the Bates fashion, Rowe knew that the magazine would evolve over time (though he may not have anticipated a yellow cover).<\/p>\n

As shown by 91 years of covers, the mag\u2019s look and feel has certainly changed. Yet the reader\u2019s main interest \u2014 what\u2019s going on at Bates \u2014 hasn\u2019t. Which is why, in that first issue, you learned about a guest lecturer who vigorously denounced the Bolshevik Revolution, about a new freshman initiation program in lieu of a ban on \u201cindiscriminate hazing,\u201d and why the football team had a tough go of it in 1919.<\/p>\n\t\n\t

Ode to a Hot Dog<\/h3>\n

In 1938, while on a \u201csplurge\u201d with Wilson House friends at Jimmy\u2019s Diner in downtown Auburn, Muriel Swicker \u201942 penned this ode on a napkin about the delights of a 30-cent hotdog.<\/p>\n

Swicker, who passed away in 2008, placed the napkin in her freshman-year scrapbook, where we found it recently after the scrapbook was donated to Bates.<\/p>\n

In the 1930s, riding was among the many offerings of the Women\u2019s Athletic Association. The Bates women\u2019s athletics motto \u2014 \u201ca sport for every girl and every girl in a sport\u201d \u2014 reflected the national reaction to the era\u2019s professionalized and exclusive sports culture.<\/p>\n
