Photograph by Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What\u2019s in a Name?<br \/>\n<em>The Kroepsch Award<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At Bates, the name \u201cKroepsch\u201d means great teaching: The college\u2019s Kroepsch Award honors professors who excel in the classroom, such as the recently announced 2013 winner, Loring Danforth, Dana Professor of Anthropology.<\/p>\n<p>To others, the name Kroepsch conjures memories of \u201cUncle Bob,\u201d a frugal man who served cocktails to dinner guests in his car before heading into restaurants, and a noted higher-education authority who once gave three commencement speeches in one day \u2014 and submitted the feat to <em>Guinness World Records<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUncle Bob\u201d is the late Robert Kroepsch \u201933, LL.D. \u201971, who funded the annual Bates teaching award with his wife, Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, Robert\u2019s grandnephew David Kroepsch (shown here) visited campus with his wife, Suzanne, to say hello to 2012 Kroepsch winner Kati Vecsey of the theater department.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Kroepsch\u2019s frugality influenced his career.
