A sociology major and education minor, Emily “Libby” Egan ’13 of Harvard, Mass., received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for work in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n

Egan’s experience includes teaching secondary students in Kenya, as well as peer assistance in writing and public speaking at Bates. She has student-taught in Lewiston public schools and conducted afterschool programs with local youth, including a book club that she founded for Somali refugees.<\/p>\n

Teaching English in Bulgaria, she says, “I’ll engage students in intercultural conversation to create an interactive and supportive learning environment, and will guide students as they use English to express their strengths and beliefs.”<\/p>\n

Thereafter she hopes to earn a master’s in education, and teach history and social studies at an urban American public school. She says, “I will draw on my Fulbright experience to offer an authentic Bulgarian and Eastern European perspective in my world geography and world history classes.”<\/p>\n
