{"id":6979,"date":"2008-07-01T14:40:36","date_gmt":"2008-07-01T18:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/batesviews.net\/?p=5756"},"modified":"2018-06-04T09:31:38","modified_gmt":"2018-06-04T13:31:38","slug":"walk-the-walk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2008\/07\/01\/walk-the-walk\/","title":{"rendered":"Walk the walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/07\/5-lobster_bake_new_commons_6559web.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/07\/5-lobster_bake_new_commons_6559web-400x265.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium alignright\" alt=\"Reunion 2008\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As winter\u2019s snowpiles grudgingly melted last spring, students tentatively took to Alumni Walk, finding sunny nooks and apt open spaces for Frisbee tossing.<\/p>\n<p>But the new space, stretching from College Street to the new dining Commons, didn\u2019t get its first real workout until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/reunion.xml\">Reunion<\/a> \u2014 June 7, 2008, at 11:24 a.m. to be exact \u2014 when 100-year-old Al Webber \u201928 led the 2008 Alumni Parade down Alumni Walk.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/x176356.xml\">View slide show: Reunion 2008<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/07\/reunion_parade_5862_hjb.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/07\/reunion_parade_5862_hjb-400x265.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium alignright\" alt=\"Reunion Parade, Alumni Weekend\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>The parade concluded near Garcelon Field, where alumni gathered to bestow service awards on<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/x178857.xml\">Robert \u201950 and Gladys Bovino Dunn \u201951<\/a> and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/x178854.xml\">Jason \u201995 and Deborah Nowak Verner \u201995<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After a picnic lunch, the walk was dedicated during a street fair featuring jugglers, a steelpan band, and dessert. Jack Keigwin \u201959, lead project donor with his family, reflected on the ebullient scene. &#8220;Taking in this sight \u2014 it\u2019s exactly what we had hoped to accomplish,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/07\/reunionalumniwalk2720.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/07\/reunionalumniwalk2720-400x293.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium alignright\" alt=\"reunionalumniwalk2720\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As alums and their families embraced the new physical space, Keigwin talked about the College\u2019s embrace of its alumni. &#8220;Alumni are the soul of Bates,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You have always honored Bates with your advocacy and support.
