(Photographs by Jay Burns\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kirwin, a team co-captain, was <a href=\"https:\/\/members.ihsainc.com\/publicnationals\/DetailResults.aspx?Class=6&amp;Year=2014&amp;Type=Individual\">seventh in intermediate equitation over fences<\/a>, and Kiesler <a href=\"https:\/\/members.ihsainc.com\/publicnationals\/DetailResults.aspx?Class=4&amp;Year=2014&amp;Type=Individual\">ninth in novice equitation over fences<\/a>. (More on those terms later.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor both of them to place in the top 10 at Nationals is an amazing accomplishment,\u201d says second-year coach Ginger Klingenstein-Albert, who, with her husband, Mike, owns <a href=\"http:\/\/www.venturefarmmaine.com\/\">Venture Farm <\/a>in nearby Pownal, where a dozen or so members of the Bates club do their riding.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78364\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0666.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78364\" class=\" wp-image-78364  \" alt=\"web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0666-600x400.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0666-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0666-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0666.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-78364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Club coach Ginger Klingenstein-Albert says placing two riders in the top 10 at Nationals &#8220;is an amazing accomplishment&#8221; for Bates.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOf the 10,000 collegiate riders from 400 colleges that start any given year, only about 400 riders qualify for the IHSA Nationals,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s especially amazing considering Katie and Hannah competed against riders from varsity programs who are coming out of the national junior ranks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEquitation\u201d is the name of this equine sport. Each class has novice, intermediate and open ranks.<\/p>\n<p>At a show, horses are assigned to riders by draw. Even if a rider&#8217;s horse is having a bad day, it\u2019s still possible to score well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt depends on how you deal with the situation,\u201d says Kirwin. \u201cAt one show, an Endicott rider had a big white horse that bucked throughout the course. But every time the horse bucked, she dealt with it calmly, and she won the class. The judge rewarded the rider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As with other equine sports, the human and horse adjust to each other\u2019s unpredictable natures \u2014 and yes, just as we humans consider horses to be unfathomable, horses can find their riders to be confusing.<\/p>\n<p>While Otis stepping on Kirwin\u2019s foot was just an unpredictable mistake, not an act of insolence, it suggests another way that a horse is less like a piece of equipment and more like, well, a teammate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lacrosse stick isn\u2019t going to vary day to day,\u201d says Kiesler. \u201cBut a teammate will have good days and bad days, so you have to be ready for a variety.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What it&#8217;s like to work with horses (or, why they&#8217;re not like a piece of sports equipment)<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Horse talk with the Bates Equestrian Club\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/95163281?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Attenborough puts it another way. \u201cWe work <i>with<\/i> our horses instead of <i>using <\/i>them. It\u2019s a partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78363\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0707.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78363\" class=\" wp-image-78363 \" alt=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0707-400x600.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0707-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0707-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0707.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-78363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cWe work with our horses instead of using them,\u201d says co-captain Carolyn Attenborough &#8217;15.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The point is, Kirwin says, you have to be attentive and mindful of the animal\u2019s quirks while you both try to perform at a high level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRiding gives you empathy [combined] with perfection and discipline,\u201d she says. \u201cYou have both at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirwin, a biochemistry major from Eliot, Maine, and Kiesler, an environmental studies major from Glencoe, Ill., are the first Bates riders to quality for the IHSA Nationals since the Bates club formed in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for Nationals, a rider must finish first or second in his or her riding category at one of eight zone championships around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Bates is Zone 1 (New England), considered one of the most competitive IHSA zones.<\/p>\n<p>At the zone championships in April at Mount Holyoke College, Kiesler was champion of her riding class and Kirwin was reserve champion, meaning overall second place.<\/p>\n<p>At Nationals, Kirwin faced the ultimate challenge when her horse refused to jump a fence that\u2019s about as tall as a folding TV tray.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78366\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0596.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78366\" class=\" wp-image-78366 \" alt=\"Katie Kirwin '15 of with Otis.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0596-400x600.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0596-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0596-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/web-140508_equestrian_riders_IMG_0596.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-78366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Kirwin &#8217;15 of Eliot, Maine, with Otis.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s not exactly the rider\u2019s fault, yet \u201cit usually means an automatic low score,\u201d Kirwin says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few years ago that would\u2019ve completely flustered me,&#8221; she adds. &#8220;I would\u2019ve lost my focus and not have been able to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirwin handled this refusal &#8220;eloquently,&#8221; says teammate Kiesler. She circled her horse back for another try, making sure he was &#8220;between both hands and legs,&#8221; using leg and hand pressure to keep him balanced and attentive.<\/p>\n<p>The pair got over the jump and &#8220;finished the course beautifully.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The judges rewarded her horsemanship by granting a rare &#8220;re-ride,&#8221; offered when a capable rider is victimized by a horse that&#8217;s having a bad day.<\/p>\n<p>The Bates riders say that a \u201ckeep on keeping on\u201d mindset comes from their coach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ginger has helped with my perseverance,\u201d Kiesler says, \u201cwith the idea of keeping going no matter what. And that\u2019s been helpful in my whole, entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has very high expectations,\u201d says Attenborough, \u201cbut that because she wants what\u2019s best for the horse and for the rider.
