President Clayton Spencer is in good company on Maine Magazine<\/em>\u2019s list of the state\u2019s most influential leaders for 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list<\/a> showcases those who \u201care moving Maine forward through their innovative business practices, commitment to purpose-driven education, lifelong support of the arts, and groundbreaking medical research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Spencer, the only college president on this year\u2019s list, emphasized how Bates\u2019 strategic priorities \u2014 the Engaged Liberal Arts*<\/a>, Purposeful Work*<\/a>, and Opportunity and Excellence*<\/a> \u2014 underscore the college\u2019s historic commitment to academic rigor and access for all talented students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have always had a deep love and appreciation for the liberal arts,\u201d she says. \u201cI genuinely believe higher education is key to the American dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drew Faust, president of Harvard University, tells Maine Magazine<\/em> that Spencer, Bates and Maine are a “perfect match.”<\/p>\n\n\n
