(Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/about\/\">Bates College<\/a> extended offers of admission to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/admission\/admitted-students\/\">1,208 students for the Class of 2019<\/a> from a record number of applicants, making it the strongest, most diverse admitted class in the college\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>Among those offered admission, there are upward trends nearly across the board: More students of color, more first-generation college-goers, more in the top 10 percent of their high school class and (for those who submitted them) an average SAT\u00a0score 21 points higher than last year.<\/p>\n<p>And, they\u2019re from everywhere: all 50 states and 43 countries are represented in this year\u2019s group of admitted students.<\/p>\n<p>The Class of 2019 had an overall admit rate of 21.4 percent, the lowest in the college\u2019s history. (Phyllis Graber Jensen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For Regular Decision, the college offered admission to 17.8 percent of applicants, also a record low.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 932 students offered admission during Regular Decision:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>37 percent are students of color (domestic and international)<\/li>\n<li>13 percent are the first in their families to go to college<\/li>\n<li>81 percent will graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, for those students reporting an official class rank<\/li>\n<li>2135 average SAT score (715 Critical Reasoning, 711 Mathematics and 709 Writing) and 32 average ACT composite\u00a0(although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/admission\/optional-testing\/\">submitting scores is optional<\/a> for applicants)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bates has accomplished this without changing its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/admission\/apply\/\">application process<\/a>. &#8220;Our results speak to the college\u2019s increased standing among high-achieving students,&#8221; said Leigh Weisenburger, the college\u2019s dean of admission and financial aid.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last several years, Bates has significantly expanded and improved its outreach through strategic and concerted efforts to enhance the college\u2019s national and global presence. (Phyllis Graber Jensen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More than 180 high school students participated in one of the college\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/admission\/preface\/\">three \u201cfly in\u201d programs<\/a>\u00a0which\u00a0covers the cost of travel\u00a0for\u00a0qualifying applicants so that they can\u00a0visit campus and stay overnight with a student host.<\/p>\n<p>The college has also stepped up its recruitment of international students, with staff spending a combined 13 weeks abroad in Asia, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. These efforts yielded more than 1,000 international applicants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBates has long been recognized as one of the nation\u2019s finest liberal arts colleges, and we are seeing growing interest from students in regions where we have increased\u00a0our recruitment such as California, Florida, and Texas,\u201d Weisenburger said.<\/p>\n<p>The college also dedicated more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/admission\/student-financial-services\/\">resources to financial aid<\/a> so that qualified students will be able to enroll. Bates budgeted $8.6 million for aid for the Class of 2019, nearly 8 percent more than last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis commitment to making Bates affordable directly links to the college\u2019s mission and allows the institution to meet 100 percent of students\u2019 demonstrated financial need,\u201d Weisenburger said<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the month of April, the college will host on- and off-campus receptions for admitted students and families so\u00a0they can meet faculty, current students and alumni and\u00a0learn more about the Bates experience.
