(Geir Johnsen NTNU\/UNIS)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Sleep&#8230;in silent darkness born,&#8221; wrote the 16th-century poet Samuel Daniel, using verse to express a fundamental notion about life on this planet: that nighttime is a close cousin of slumber and quietude.<\/p>\n<p>But in this era of climate change, longstanding truths fall by the wayside.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_95556\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/E_130923_Will_Ambrose_0118.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95556\" class=\"wp-image-95556 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/E_130923_Will_Ambrose_0118-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"E_130923_Will_Ambrose_0118\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/E_130923_Will_Ambrose_0118-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/E_130923_Will_Ambrose_0118-643x900.jpg 643w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/E_130923_Will_Ambrose_0118-143x200.jpg 143w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/E_130923_Will_Ambrose_0118.jpg 771w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-95556\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor of Biology Will Ambrose contributed a major finding to the Svalbard polar night project.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For example, the researchers who study marine life around Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the high Arctic (79 degrees north latitude), used to suspend their fieldwork each winter when night lasts from October to February.<\/p>\n<p>They believed that darkness put the ecosystem to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>But over the last three winters, a group of about 100 scientists, including Bates Professor of Biology Will Ambrose, have proven that assumption wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Their surprise at their discovery, published recently in the journal <em>Current Biology<\/em>, is right there in the title of their paper: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/abstract\/S0960-9822%2815%2900995-1\">Unexpected Levels of Biological Activity during the Polar Night Offer New Perspectives on a Warming Arctic.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The findings, notes the paper, &#8220;unequivocally oppose the classical paradigm of an ecosystem in resting mode&#8221; during the polar night.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-34334801\">BBC said in a story<\/a>, the researchers saw that &#8220;many species of tiny critters were actively reproducing, shellfish continued to feed and grow, and even many species of predators were still chasing down their meals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some seabirds, too, are staying around rather than flying south, fishing for meals in the pitch dark.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97099\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/10\/crop2010-GJ-Macbook668.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97099\" class=\"size-large wp-image-97099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/10\/crop2010-GJ-Macbook668-900x548.jpg\" alt=\"Bird species, like this black guillemot, were observed foraging for food in complete darkness. (Geir Johnsen NTNU\/UNIS)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The paper&#8217;s title also indicates that any findings must be considered against the backdrop of global climate change, even if the role of our warming planet in their discoveries is unknown. &#8220;Low ice cover and warm water temperatures alone do not explain our observations,&#8221; the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>The warming Arctic did affect the project in one basic way, said lead researcher J\u00f8rgen Berge of UiT the Arctic University of Norway. (Geir Johnsen NTNU\/UNIS)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He contributed one of the paper\u2019s major findings, that clams, Ambrose&#8217;s specialty, continued to grow during the long and dark winter. &#8220;The continual growth of the bivalves really surprised me,&#8221; Ambrose says.<\/p>\n<p>The clam data are part of a larger project dubbed &#8220;Talking Clams,&#8221; in which researchers are receiving &#8220;continuous data on the behavior and growth&#8221; of bivalves from the area, &#8220;delivered by means of a data connection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(It&#8217;s called high-frequency noninvasive valvometry, where electrodes attached to the mollusks&#8217; valves tell scientists when the valves move, which can indicate stress, a pollutant, or a change in water quality or temperature.)<\/p>\n<p>Mostly, the Svalbard researchers want to emphasize that, in Ambrose\u2019s words, &#8220;many of the generalizations about the functioning of the Arctic marine ecosystem need to be re-evaluated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Patterns and processes occurring during the important spring bloom&#8221;\u2014 a time of rapid growth of phytoplankton, a food source for other organisms higher on the food chain\u00a0\u2014 &#8220;are impossible to fully comprehend without a thorough understanding of the polar night,&#8221; he adds.<\/p>\n<p>And as these Arctic scientists are rethinking fundamental ideas about darkness and ecosystems, they&#8217;re also having to adjust how they think about seasons in general.<\/p>\n<p>At least in the Arctic,\u00a0basic routines of marine life, like reproduction or migration, may someday stop being linked primarily with the changing seasons.
