“We’re pulling out all the stops,” says visiting artist Frank Carlberg, for a March 21 event dedicated to the music \u2014 and the larger-than-life spirit \u2014 of Sun Ra, a truly unique figure in jazz.<\/p>\n

The performance Space Is The Place \/ The World of Sun Ra<\/em><\/a> will incorporate re-interpretations of Ra’s music and poetry by the Bates Jazz Band and Jazz Combo, the Gamelan Orchestra, and individual students and faculty in music and dance. The theater department will embellish the event with lighting and costume design.<\/p>\n

“I think Ra is, in some ways, an underrated figure in American culture and his historical significance is larger than widely recognized,” says Carlberg. “I wanted to bring his music and ideas to students at Bates and they responded with great enthusiasm.<\/p>\n
