(Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On an individual level, says Lundblad, the funding \u201cgives Bates students the opportunity to take part in world-class scientific research within the context of a small college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the summer cohort as a whole, the Summer Science Research Experience will create solidarity and community by offering professional development workshops, opportunities to make research presentations, and group outings.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The grant comes to Bates at a \u201cpivotal juncture\u201d in the college\u2019s history.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis program gives the students experience and a perspective on science that will not only extend their education as a major in that field but also help launch them into their work after Bates, whether it involves graduate study, private industry, or other work,\u201d Lundblad says.<\/p>\n<p>Even more broadly, the grant comes to Bates at a \u201cpivotal juncture\u201d in the college\u2019s history, says Auer.<\/p>\n<p>In the current decade, Bates anticipates the retirement of roughly a third of the faculty, many in science fields; in turn, their successors are now arriving on campus in \u201cunprecedented numbers,\u201d Auer said, all of whom will be eager for students to help continue their research programs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_99909\" style=\"width: 274px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/diamond-stanic_400x400.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-99909\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99909\" class=\"wp-image-99909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/diamond-stanic_400x400-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/diamond-stanic_400x400-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/diamond-stanic_400x400-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/diamond-stanic_400x400-200x200.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/diamond-stanic_400x400.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-99909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The $270K foundation grant &#8220;says a lot about the institutional support&#8221; for student and faculty research at Bates, says physicist Aleks Diamond-Stanic, one of Bates&#8217; newest professors.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among the newest of the new faculty members is Aleks Diamond-Stanic, one of two young physicists who have accepted Bates\u2019 offer to join the faculty in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>As a Grainger Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison, Diamond-Stanic studies the \u201cco-evolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hearing news of the grant, Diamond-Stanic says that the new funding \u201csays a lot about the institutional support at Bates for engaging students in cutting-edge research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professionally, he adds that it is \u201cexciting for me to have the opportunity to advance my research program through projects that involve Bates students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll have the chance to solve problems and explore data-driven solutions to outstanding scientific questions, and they will be able to do so in an environment that is supportive of their growth and success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At Bates, summer research offers a quasi-semester experience for both faculty and students.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96428\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/08\/150813_BMMC_Short_Ridge_0141.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-96428\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96428\" class=\"size-large wp-image-96428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/08\/150813_BMMC_Short_Ridge_0141-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"A summer researcher with Professor of Geology Beverly Johnson, Cailene Gunn '16 of Granby, Conn., collects gas samples in a coastal Maine marsh. (Josh Kuckens\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Of the approximately 50 faculty in science disciplines at Bates, 75 percent mentor at least one summer student researcher. <\/p>\n<p>On the student side, 78 did summer research in 2015 funded either by the college or by a professor\u2019s own research grant.
