Opening Day: Draft Schedule (Wed, Aug. 26)

We look forward to welcoming new students and their families as able to join us for Opening Day and Move-In on Wednesday, August 26, 2020. The Opening Day schedule provides time to settle in and get comfortable prior to students participating in the remainder of Orientation. The times below primarily indicate ranges that should feel flexible as your travel schedule allows. We hope you will make the most of your day on campus and, please reach out with any questions to

7:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon All New Students Check-In/Move-In


Students should be dropped at Commons (136 Central Avenue) to check-in, while parents and families proceed to the residence hall. Campus maps will be provided with parking noted.

All are welcome to engage with a variety of campus offices with information pertinent to new students.  Representatives from TD Bank will also be present to open bank accounts for new students.

These sessions will offer parents and family members insight into supporting their students through their transition into the Bates community.  There will be a short break between sessions. New students should use this time to continue settling into their residence halls and meeting fellow new students.

While your student is adjusting to life in college, you’ll be spending the coming year learning how to effectively parent a college student. This session will give you a jumpstart by offering common college scenarios and some ways of addressing each. Q&A will follow.

Students’ families who live around the world, join us to meet Dean Reese, Shirley Govindasamy, and Shelley Palmer to hear an outline of services, programs, support, and approaches to supporting students in the International Circle.   Everyone may attend.

Administrators from the Purposeful Work initiative at Bates will discuss how parents and families can best support their students as they engage with opportunities throughout college and beyond.

One hallmark of a Bates education is the many ways our students get off campus for learning, research, internships, fellowships, jobs, and volunteering. Join Professor Darby Ray, Director of the Harward Center for Community Partnerships, for an interactive session on the diverse opportunities offered by the local Lewiston-Auburn community.

3:00 p.m. – 3:25 p.m. Parent and Family Optional Session – Enriching the Bates Experience: Tips for Supporting Student Engagement On-Campus


An enriching college experience includes getting involved with the Bates community outside of the classroom. This session offers families an overview of the many extracurricular and co-curricular opportunities available to Bates students.  Learn how students can get involved in student-led clubs, organizations, and social programming/events and how you can support them as they explore, discover, and build new skills and interests.
