Welcome Class of 2020

Hello new students,CarrieMurphey

I am pleased to have the opportunity to write to you on behalf of my colleagues in Student Affairs. As we begin to learn about you and your classmates, we are deeply impressed — and delighted that you will join our academic community this fall as a member of the Class of 2020.

In this community, you will live and learn alongside fellow students from across the country and the globe, taught and supported by a remarkably gifted faculty and staff dedicated to providing the best liberal arts college experience in the nation.

The entire Student Affairs team and our campus colleagues look forward to welcoming you to Bates on the morning of Monday, August 29. We have designed an engaging and informative orientation program for the Class of 2020 — some key dates are listed below. All new students, except for those who participate on a fall athletic team, must register for an Annual Entering Student Outdoor Program (AESOP) trip by Friday, July 1.

This year’s Common Reading, selected specifically for your class as you begin your Bates experience, is This I Believe, co-edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman. This published compilation of personal essays featured on NPR’s radio program of the same name feature over 80 essays where authors complete the prompt offered in the title, describing their beliefs, values, and life philosophies. We hope that engaging with these stories will offer the opportunity to consider your own personally held commitments and allow for the chance to consider those within our community context this fall. Please purchase a copy of this fascinating book and read it over the summer, as we will be discussing it during orientation. On the last day of orientation, Tuesday, September 6, we will welcome co-editor Dan Gediman as the keynote speaker for Opening Convocation, the formal beginning of our academic year.

As you might expect, there are a number of administrative matters you will need to attend to over the summer. They are listed below, and you will find many of them on this Orientation website. If you have questions about these forms or anything else, please be in touch with me at 207-755-5979 or firstyearstudents@bates.edu.

I look forward to meeting you on August 29. Meanwhile, I wish you all the best as you complete your senior year, celebrate high school graduation, and enjoy your summer.

Carrie Murphey
Assistant Dean of Students for First-Year Programs
