Orientation is almost here

Hello to all new Bates students and families!

With Opening Day just around the corner — Monday, Aug. 27th — there are a few final details that I want to share as you prepare to join us on campus to begin your time at Bates.

We look forward to welcoming you to check-in and to start moving into your residence between 7 a.m. and noon on Monday. We know you’re excited to get here — and believe me, we are so excited to have you here! — but I want to emphasize that there’s no need to arrive earlier. There will be ample time to move in and get settled.

When you arrive, new students should plan to be dropped off by their families to check in and receive their residence hall key and campus ID at Commons (136 Central Ave.). Families will proceed to the residence hall with the student’s belongings, and the student will rejoin them there shortly.

Staff and upperclass student volunteers will meet and help out families as they arrive at the residence halls. Parking will be available nearby after unloading, and we’ll provide campus maps that clearly show residence halls and available parking.

Doing check-in this way allows us to make the process as efficient as possible for all new students, so we thank you in advance for collaborating in this effort.

Beyond checking in, moving in, and settling in, there are a number of campus events throughout the day that we encourage families to experience.

An “at-a-glance” schedule will be provided along with a parking map at check-in, but for full event listings and details throughout Opening Day and Orientation, please visit the schedule online.

Summer is almost over. And while we may watch with a small sigh as the warmer days fade into crisp autumn, we know that fall also brings our new students to campus, and we cannot wait for you to be here.

So, pack your raincoat (just in case!), pack your copy of Real American (you did already read it, right?), and we’ll see you Monday!

All the best,

Carrie Murphey ’06, Assistant Dean of Students for First-Year Experience and Housing
