2024 & 2025 First Weekend

The Bates Community would like to welcome you to the 2024 & 2025 First Weekend! This is an opportunity to meet and connect with the resources available to you across campus. There will be activities and programs from Friday afternoon through all of Saturday. 

Take a walking tour of Lewiston with the Harward Center, connect with Bates EMS and learn about how to get involved, or spend some time playing tennis at Wallach Tennis Center! We hope that you take advantage of this event and familiarize yourself with everything that Bates has to offer.

Recreation is a valuable part of the student experience to escape the classroom, relieve stress, socialize with friends, and move around! Try out a variety of athletic and recreational activities available for students including basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, pickleball, and the climbing wall.

A 5-unit fitness equipment cluster adjacent to the Wallach Tennis Center gives students, faculty, and staff functional training space in an outdoor setting. The park features various elements including pull-up and push-up bars, plyometric platforms, a log hop, and parallel bars. 

Come check out the park, play on some of the equipment and learn exercise in a guided (optional) workout!

The Math & Statistics Workshop group is offering a lesson on how to construct a beautiful and intricate geometric pattern. The design is based upon an interlacing motif of 6-pointed stars found in numerous locations at the Royal Alcazar of Seville in Spain, some of which include the skirting in the the Prince’s Suite, Courtyard of the Maidens, and latticework in the Hall of Justice.

Interested in learning about video editing and live sound? Join Stuart Gurley in the Olin Arts Center. Stuart will be showing folks the basics of video editing and you’ll have the opportunity to learn about potential employment opportunities!

Drop in to the Writing & Language Center for some creative play to help you move through those pesky first-year writing nerves and get your writing and speaking juices flowing. Find us by coming through Ladd Library’s front doors, turning left, and then left again to enter into The Academic Resource Commons space. Head back to the Writing & Language Center to join the fun!

Jewish Student Union Welcome Back Bagel Brunch 
We’ll be meeting at the Office of Intercultural Education in Chase Hall to munch on lots of bagels (from Forage, a local artisan cafe) and schmooze (chat informally) with other first-year students and upperclassmen who are involved with JSU. You do NOT have to be Jewish and/or personally identify with Judaism to join us– we are a club that’s dedicated to building connections between folks who have an interest in Judaism and/or noshing on delicious food!
