{"id":160,"date":"2010-09-29T19:15:12","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T23:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/batesoutingclub.com\/"},"modified":"2020-10-12T11:27:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T15:27:03","slug":"the-boc-lean-to","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/outing-club\/traditions\/the-boc-lean-to\/","title":{"rendered":"The BOC Lean-To"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Built in 2000, the BOC Lean-To serves as the BOC&#8217;s home away from home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-170 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/batesoutingclub.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/picture-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As long as Bates remains an intense, undergraduate liberal arts college, its future students will need a place of refuge just as much as my class did-a place to get off to the woods, for solitude and reflection, a place to gather in good comradeship around a fire, a place to tell stories. As the campus, and the city of Lewiston grow more crowded, retreat places on campus and nearby will only become more scarce. Now, the BOC will always have the lean-to\u2014a place in the woods, not too far away\u2014but far enough.&#8221; &#8211; Judy Marden &#8217;66<\/p>\n<p>Check out an article from Bates News about the Lean-To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/09\/18\/overnight-at-the-bates-outing-club-lean-to\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Directions to the Bates Outing Club Lean-to in Greene<\/h4>\n<p>From Lewiston (about 12 miles, total):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go north on Main Street, Route 202, toward Augusta for about 5 miles\u00a0from the Veterans\u2019 Memorial Bridge overpass.<\/li>\n<li>After the \u201cWelcome to Greene\u201d sign, you will reach a stretch of road with a\u00a0cemetery on each side.<\/li>\n<li>Turn left at the Greene Christian Community Church (white clapboard meeting house) onto Meadow Hill Road. (if you come to the Greene Gowell&#8217;s Shop and Save, you have gone too far).<\/li>\n<li>This road will take you toward the Androscoggin River, then around a\u00a0broad right turn (at Val-Greene Farm) onto the North River Road. The Bates\u00a0Boathouse is on the left.<\/li>\n<li>Continue parallel to the river (visible to your left) to Gagne Road on the\u00a0right. Turn right, go uphill to the T intersection.<\/li>\n<li>Turn right on North Mountain Road (dirt road).<\/li>\n<li>Go half-a-mile mile straight uphill (past the Copper Ridge Road and a gray house on the left) to Judy Marden\u2019s house, an old brick cape at the end of the road. Judy (Bates \u201966) is the BOC Advisor and owner of the land around the lean-to.<\/li>\n<li>There is a turnaround\/parking circle at the end of the road. When\u00a0parking, be sure to leave enough room to get out of the driveway, and for\u00a0the snowplow to turn around if it\u2019s winter.<\/li>\n<li>To get to the Bates Outing Club Lean-to, continue up the discontinued road\u00a0(snowmobile trail) past the gate for about 1\/8 mile to an open area. Turn left\u00a0(east) on the path through the open area.
