Anissa examined whether people differing in self-concept clarity (a construct that refers to the certainty and stability of self-views) would respond differently to thinking about isolation from (versus being surrounded by) family and friends. The outcome of interest was compensating for isolation (versus inclusion) through identification with Bates College. While people lower in self-concept clarity felt less good about themselves, less certain about themselves, and less respected than higher self-concept clarity individuals overall, there was no effect of the manipulation on Bates identification.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t Gabe Siegel '19 researched factors influencing eyewitnesses<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t Rachel Minkovitz '19 and her advisor Prof. Alex Borgella. Rachel looked at the impact of race on sexual assault claims.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t Emily Tan '19 enjoying herself at the senior poster session.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t Claire Hammer '19 and her advisor Prof. Alex Borgella. Claire examined whether the teller of a joke influences how the joke is perceived.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t In his Fall 2018 first-year seminar, Searching for the Good Life, Michael Sargent<\/a> tried out a new assignment. In three-person teams, the students conducted interviews with five interesting people, discussing their work. In keeping with the seminar’s status as a Purposeful Work Infusion course, the students prepared for the interviews by immersing themselves in each guest’s work, and then asked about both the work itself, as well as the personal story that led them to their career. The teams interviewed a former Pentagon chief of staff, a philosopher, and a National Geographic photographer, as well as two social scientists, evolutionary psychologist David Buss and choice researcher Sheena Iyengar.
