What is Bates Bridge?
Bates Bridge is a new online platform to foster student-to-alumni and alumni-to-alumni connections. Batesies connect with one another for meaningful discussions — regardless of where they are in the world or where they are on their own path. The platform supports students and alumni as they ask questions, connect with new people, join groups, and inspire each other.
Who can create an account in Bates Bridge?
Current Bates students and Bates alumni from all majors and class years are invited to participate in the Bates Bridge platform. Non-alumni faculty, staff, parents, and friends of the institution are not currently eligible to participate.
What happens when I sign up?
Bates Bridge will recommend connections based on your profile information after you answer a brief series of questions. You may also browse the professionals within the Bates network by industry, major, location, and more.
Who can see my profile information?
Once you send a connection request, that individual alum will be able to view your profile to determine if the connection is a good fit. An alum cannot view your profile until you make your request. Additionally, other students can never view your profile.
Current Bates students and other alumni using Bates Bridge will be able to view your profile. Alumni can connect with students as well as other alumni.
Can I still use Handshake?
Handshake is still the Center for Purposeful Work’s primary job, internship, and event system. Students and alumni can and should use Handshake for those purposes.

How do I use Bates Bridge?
Bates Bridge is a user-driven program where you can search for and contact alumni. The software recommends alumni connections based on what you include in your profile. You can also browse the community of alumni by industry, major, location, and more.
You initiate contact with alumni by asking for advice or requesting informational interviews. These conversations can happen via email, over the phone, by video conference, or in-person – all good mechanisms to connect with alumni.
It is important to recognize that the requested alumni have the opportunity to either accept or decline your request, depending on their availability.
How can I get the most out of this program?
Be active! Ask questions, reach out to new people, and check out our resources. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone. Alumni are waiting for you to connect with them. The Bates network is ready to support you.
As a Bates Bridge user, what is expected of me?
First, be sure to complete your profile and upload a photo. You can use LinkedIn to automatically fill in much of your information. Set your availability preferences to indicate how much time you want to commit, and how many student or alumni users you would like to connect with.
If you get a request we hope you’ll accept it, but you do have the option to decline a student if you simply don’t have time or think it is not a fit. Once connected, share your experiences and career journey. Be a resource to current students and other alumni as they develop their professional interests and face opportunities.
How do I change the number of emails I receive?
Click your profile picture in the top right of the screen to set your notification preferences.
I’m not receiving messages from other users. What should I do?
Since Bates Bridge is a user-driven platform, Bates students and alumni will view your profile and reach out to request a conversation. Sometimes it takes a while for someone to discover you, so please be patient!
It is possible that messages ended up in your spam folder, so be sure to check it occasionally for any lost messages. If this problem continues to persist, click the Help (?) button in the upper right corner of your screen.
How can I use Bates Bridge for my own professional development?
Bates Bridge is not just for students! Alumni are welcome to search for and contact other alumni. You can browse the community of alumni by industry, major, location, and more. From there, request informational conversations with other alumni for your own networking and professional development.
