{"id":14557,"date":"2018-12-13T08:19:52","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T13:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/career\/?page_id=14557"},"modified":"2026-04-20T14:02:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T18:02:28","slug":"minigrant","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/minigrant\/","title":{"rendered":"Purposeful Work Mini Grant Funding Request Form"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Overview<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bates Center for Purposeful Work offers limited financial support (an annual budget of approximately $10,000) to students for professional attire, graduate school test prep &amp; application fees, and interview and conference transportation costs, insofar as they relate to Purposeful Work. These funds do not have to be repaid.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mini Grant awards are available up to $300.00 (up to $150.00 can be used for professional attire), and students are typically limited to one award per academic year (refer to rubric below).<\/strong> Requesting and\/or receiving support will not affect a student\u2019s annual financial aid award, but may affect future Mini Grant decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the budget is limited, we make every effort to fund each eligible request. The program supports, on average, 30-40 grants per year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Expenses Not Covered by the Purposeful Work Mini Grant Fund:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuition for any course that could be considered for Bates credit<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Study abroad costs<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal bills such as utility, credit card, cable, cell phone, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parking tickets, library fines, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food Expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overnight Accommodations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Purposeful Work Internship Funding: <\/strong>If you have an internship and would like to apply for funding, please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/purposeful-work-internships\/\">Purposeful Work Internship<\/a>&nbsp;web page.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purposeful Work Job Shadow Program transportation:<\/strong> College Key transportation grants are available for eligible students, please contact jobshadow@bates.edu with any questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Requests that are academic and\/or research in nature: <\/strong>We encourage students to apply to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/academic-year\/bates-student-research-fund\/\">Bates Student Research Fund<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>STEM students seeking travel grants for academic conferences and professional meetings: <\/strong>We encourage students to apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/academic-year\/stem-travel-grants\/\">STEM Travel Grants<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emergency requests: <\/strong>Please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/student-affairs\/student-support-and-advising\/student-emergency-funding\/\">Student Emergency Fund<\/a> web page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Non-PW Departments:<\/strong> The Mini Grant Program does not support costs related to other offices&#8217; or departments&#8217; programs or offerings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Groups of Students:<\/strong> The Mini Grant Program is meant to support individual students. Quality of Experience <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How would the grant contribute to the exploration of purposeful work? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Prior Purposeful Work Mini Grant Funding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior grants will reduce rubric scores via a sliding scale (depending on the size of prior grants). The cumulative effect of prior grants (or even a single large grant) within a given year can make a student ineligible for further grants within that same year. Each student and circumstance is unique.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Notification<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requests are considered every week during the academic year. Students will be contacted by a member of the Center for Purposeful Work staff via campus email.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Accessing Funds<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processing the Mini Grant award decision and payment takes time. If awarded a Mini Grant, our default process is to deposit funds into your bank account for you to pay for the expense with your own credit or debit card. In the event that your bank account is not set up for direct deposit with Bates, a paper check will be mailed to your student mailbox via Post &amp; Print. <\/span><b>If you do not have a bank account set up for direct deposit with Bates, and\/or do not have a credit or debit card to pay for your expense, and\/or cannot pay for the expense up-front while waiting for time-sensitive funds to arrive, please let us know in the \u201cPlan Ahead\u201d box at the bottom of the application form so that we can make alternative arrangements.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mini Grant recipients will be required to reflect on their experience supported by the grant.
