{"id":3051,"date":"2011-10-27T15:42:14","date_gmt":"2011-10-27T19:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/career\/?page_id=3051"},"modified":"2023-07-23T18:52:03","modified_gmt":"2023-07-23T22:52:03","slug":"gre","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/gre\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Graduate Record Examination (\u201cGRE\u201d)<\/strong> is required by many graduate programs in the U.S. The publisher, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ets.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Educational Testing Services<\/a> (\u201cETS\u201d), has an informative website that provides: general information, test registration, and test preparation materials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/test-takers\/general-test\/register\/fees.html\">Test registration<\/a> costs $220 in the United States, with a possibility for a fee reduction (scroll to the bottom of the test registration page).<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: <em>A GRE Fee Reduction Voucher may be used for one GRE General Test and\/or one GRE Subject Test. Individuals who receive a GRE Fee Reduction voucher will pay $100 to register for the GRE General Test and\/or 50% of the regular test fee for a GRE Subject Test (i.e., $75). Those registering for the General Test will also receive free access to several GRE test prep materials.<\/em> Please review the eligibility requirements and consult with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/financial-services\/contact-information\/\">Student Financial Services<\/a> to complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/pdfs\/gre\/gre-fee-reduction-request-form.pdf\">GRE Fee Reduction Voucher Request Form<\/a>. BE AWARE: It can take several weeks after submitting your request form and supporting materials to ETS before receiving your fee reduction voucher. DO NOT wait until the last minute &#8212; submit as early as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The GRE is a computer-based test with sections measuring Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE: As of September 2023, the GRE will be significantly shorter. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/test-takers\/general-test\/enhancements.html\">here<\/a> for details.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/test-takers\/general-test\/register\/at-home-testing.html\">The test can be taken at home<\/a>, provided that your computer and testing room meet the specific requirements set by ETS.<\/p>\n<p>The test is also offered throughout the year at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/test-takers\/general-test\/where-to-test.html\">authorized test centers around the world<\/a>.\u00a0 Two of the closest test centers to Bates<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u00a0are:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Prometric Testing Center, Atlantic Place, Building B, Suite #44, 311 Darling Avenue, South Portland, ME, 04106<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">University of Maine &#8211; Farmington, 52 Main Street, Franklin Hall, Third Floor, Farmington, ME, 04938<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/test-takers\/subject-tests\/about.html\">GRE Subject Tests<\/a> are available and intended for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in: Mathematics, Physics, and\/or <span style=\"color: initial; font-family: var(--fontSansSerif);\">Psychology. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/test-takers\/subject-tests\/where-to-test.html\">These tests can also be taken at home<\/a>, but are offered 2 weeks per month in September, October, and April at computer-delivered centers worldwide.<\/span> Test registration costs $150, with a possibility for a fee reduction as noted above.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: <em>Testing accommodations are available for test takers who meet ETS requirements.
