{"id":8406,"date":"2014-07-21T11:28:51","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T15:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/career\/?page_id=8406"},"modified":"2024-10-23T13:11:06","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T17:11:06","slug":"other-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/other-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"Grants, Credit &#038; Fellowships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internships, study abroad, club leadership, academic research &#8211; all are ways students take a thoughtful, concrete next step and test the hypothesis that they&#8217;ve formed about themselves based on their personalities, values, strengths and interests.\u00a0The Center for Purposeful Work supports students as they take these next steps and test their hypotheses, connecting them with the tools they need to research and access opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Especially for their summers, we assist students in exploring and considering a wide variety of funded opportunities as a way to test their passions, build skills and knowledge, and gain exposure to the work that interests them. For students without inherited networks of professionals and mentors, gaining experience and contacts in a workplace opens doors to additional people on whom they can rely for guidance in their future.<\/p>\n<p>There are hundreds of\u00a0paid and unpaid opportunities to experience work posted in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bates.joinhandshake.com\/login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Handshake<\/a><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0including\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/career\/purposeful-work-internships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Purposeful Work Internships<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/summer\/bates-environmental-internship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bates Environmental Internships<\/a><\/strong>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/innovation\/innovate-for-maine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Innovate for Maine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hanleyleadership.org\/leadership-courses\/healthcare-leadership-internship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hanley Health Internships<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Grants from Bates<\/h3>\n<p>The Dean of Faculty&#8217;s office and the Harward Center for Community Partnerships offer opportunities for academic year and summer grants to help fund student experiences locally, nationally and internationally:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/academic-year\/\">Academic Year Research Grants<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/harward\/grants-2\/studentsay\/\">Harward Center Academic Year Grants<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Summer funding is made available\u00a0by the Dean of Faculty&#8217;s office, the Harward Center, and the Center for Purposeful Work through a\u00a0variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/summer-funded-opportunities\/\">funded\u00a0summer experiences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Internships for Credit<\/h3>\n<p>If an employer requires &#8220;academic credit&#8221; for an internship, a student may apply for the <em>Internship for Credit<\/em> status. Through this program, one credit may be available as a notation on the student&#8217;s transcript. <strong>Please be aware that <em>internship credit<\/em> will not count as one of the 32 credits required for graduation, nor will it be included in a student\u2019s GPA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifications: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internships must last a minimum of six weeks and at least 120 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Internships for credit are reviewed by the Center for Purposeful Work on a semesterly basis.<\/li>\n<li>Students are limited to two qualifying internships for a total of two transcript notations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: This information does not apply to internships completed as part of a Bates course requirement. If you have questions about a specific course that requires the completion of an internship, or questions about designing an independent study, please contact the academic department or the Registrar\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International students:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any international student who is applying for an internship for credit must also apply for CPT per the standard CPT process. Begin by contacting Shelley Palmer in Global Education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although international students generally may not apply for CPT during their first year, they may apply for CPT for the summers of their sophomore or junior years.\u00a0 Students may also participate in a CPT-authorized internship during their winter break, which is rare but does occasionally occur. Any CPT during the academic semester will affect the student&#8217;s post-completion OPT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International students (F-1 Visa holders) are only eligible for internship-for-credit during the summers, specifically between their sophomore\/junior and junior\/senior summers\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International students are not eligible for academic year internships-for-credit unless careful consideration is made regarding the impact on their OPT and the time available for post-grad work in the United States.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Deadlines:<\/h6>\n<p>Applications for internship for credit are due by the following dates or two weeks before the internship begins, whichever comes first:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall 2024 internships \u2013 October 22, 2024<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter 2025 internships \u2013 February 18, 2025<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer 2025 internships \u2013 July 15, 2025<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information and application forms, please contact the Center for Purposeful Work at <a href=\"mailto:purposefulwork@bates.edu\">purposefulwork@bates.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fellowships<\/h3>\n<p>Bates College ranks fourth in the nation for Fulbright U.S. student awards.
