Registration for Short Term & Fall 2022
For Registration for Short Term and Fall 2022, we are returning to our standard registration process, known as Optimization. This system has three phases and should be familiar to our current juniors and seniors.
The Course Schedule will be published for students two weeks before registration begins. Students begin by meeting with their advisor to discuss course options and their advisor then removes their advising hold. Students should also check the “Holds” page in Garnet Gateway (found under the “Current” menu) to determine if there are any other holds they must address before registering.
Phase I – Initial Week of Registration – Saturday, March 5 to Friday, March 11 at 4:00pm
During the initial registration week, students enter their course selections into the Garnet Gateway through the Registration link in the teal box. They register for up to 4.5 credits for the Fall 2022 semester and .5 credits for Short Term 2022 and may do so at any time during this initial registration week. There is no prioritization by class or major and students can enter their course selections anytime before the deadline. The timing of their registration during this week doesn’t impact their chances of getting into any of their courses. Students must register during this initial week if they intend to enroll in the upcoming term and not doing so will result in a late registration fee.
Phase II – Optimization and Petitioning
Optimization – Monday, March 14
Once the initial registration week concludes, the Registrar’s Office runs an algorithm known as Optimization. This algorithm analyzes all oversubscribed courses and randomly selects students from among those who registered the previous week and these students are registered for the course. Students who are not randomly selected become Eligible to Petition and ARE NOT registered for the course. Optimization also balances the enrollments of multiple-section courses as much as possible.
Student Petitioning – Tuesday, March 15 – Friday, March 18
Once Optimization concludes, students are notified by the Registrar’s Office that they may view their schedule. If their schedule shows they are registered for a course, there is nothing more they need to do. If they did not gain access to a course through Optimization, their schedule will show the course with the status “Eligible to Petition” (EP). One or two spaces in each oversubscribed course are reserved for students to request entry by submitting a petition to the instructor. This allows students who want or need a course but who did not gain entry through optimization to request entry directly from the instructor. Petitions can be initiated and sent to the instructor from the student’s schedule on the Add/Drop a Course page in Garnet Gateway. Faculty have a week to review and accept petitions. If a petition is accepted, the student is registered for the course automatically.
Phase III – Registration Adjustments (add/drop) – Wednesday, March 30 at 7:00am
Following petitioning, Add/Drop opens for all students on a space-available basis and students may add up to 5.5 credits at this time. Students may add or drop courses as space allows until the legislated add and drop deadlines in the Bates Catalog.
Thursday, February 17 – Course Schedule is made available to students
February 21-25 – February break
Saturday, March 5 – Friday, March 11, 4:00pm – Students register for up to 4.5 credits
Monday, March 14 – Optimization run Tuesday, March 15 – Friday, March 18 – Students view their fall schedule and petition for courses they did not gain access to through Optimization
Saturday, March 19 – Sunday, March 27 – Faculty review and accept students through petitioning
Wednesday, March 30, 7:00am – Add/Drop opens and students may register for up to 5.5 credits
Can I really register anytime during registration week?
Yes, it doesn’t matter if you register on the first day or the final day. For Fall 2022 registration you just need to be registered for up to 4.5 credits and for Short Term 2022 for .5 credits by Friday, March 11th at 4:00pm ET.
Can I join a waitlist if I don’t get in?
The Optimization process doesn’t include waitlists. Students are automatically put on an “Eligible to Petition” list and may submit a petition through the end of the petition submission period.
What if I have a hold?
Students are encouraged to check the “Holds” page in Garnet Gateway and contact the appropriate office to resolve the issue preventing registration as soon as possible. All students will have a registration hold, and your advisor can lift this hold when you meet with them prior to registering. Another common hold that would prevent registration is a Financial hold from the Student Financial Services office if there is a balance on your account.
I got into a course but not the section I asked for. Why?
Optimization will attempt to get as many students into as many courses as possible. Sometimes the way to do this is to register a student for an alternate section of a course they selected. Additionally, faculty have requested that Optimization attempt to balance sections of multiple section courses to the extent possible.
Do I have to petition for a course I didn’t get?
You have the option to petition but you do not have to submit a petition for a course. You can simply wait and add a different course during Add/Drop.
I got a registration error. How do I fix it?
If you get a registration error, such as a prerequisite error, the registration attempt is dropped. The only way to successfully register for the course is to resolve the error or to obtain the appropriate override from the instructor. You can see a chart of errors and the overrides needed on the Registrar’s office website.
