Access from off campus requires a VPN or SSH Keys (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/research-resources\/ssh-key-setup-quick-guide\/\">instructions for creating SSH Keys<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Backups are&nbsp;<strong>not provided for \/home<\/strong>. There is no other scratch disk space on the machine; everything is in \/home. You will have to transfer data to Etna in order to analyze it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Logging in<a href=\"https:\/\/quest-at-bates.github.io\/leavittonboarding.html#logging-in\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leavitt can be logged into at leavitt.bates.edu using ssh. On campus, all you need to do is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code><a href=\"https:\/\/quest-at-bates.github.io\/leavittonboarding.html#cb1-1\"><\/a>ssh yourusername@leavitt.bates.edu<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This uses default port 22 on campus. If you want to sign in from off campus, you have to use port 222 and you must specify it in your ssh login:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code><a href=\"https:\/\/quest-at-bates.github.io\/leavittonboarding.html#cb2-1\"><\/a>ssh -p 222 yourusername@leavitt.bates.edu<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will prompt you to enter your password \u2013 this will be your Bates password. You won\u2019t be able to see what you\u2019re typing so just be careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigating with the command line<a href=\"https:\/\/quest-at-bates.github.io\/leavittonboarding.html#navigating-with-the-command-line\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.codecademy.com\/article\/ready-command-line-commands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this article<\/a>&nbsp;on command line commands and familiarize yourself with how to change directories (cd), list the files in a directory (ls), copy files (cp and cp -r), and determine your directory\u2019s address (pwd). Hang on to this article, because you may need to do other operations and it\u2019s a useful resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you log in to leavitt, you will be in your home directory. You can find the address to your current directory by using the command<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code><a href=\"https:\/\/quest-at-bates.github.io\/leavittonboarding.html#cb3-1\"><\/a>pwd<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see what is in your current directory by using the command<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code><a href=\"https:\/\/quest-at-bates.github.io\/leavittonboarding.html#cb4-1\"><\/a>ls<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigating to a project directory<a href=\"https:\/\/quest-at-bates.github.io\/leavittonboarding.html#navigating-to-the-project-directory\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can do some work in your home directory, but you will need to submit jobs out of the project directory.
