Leavitt – What is it?<\/h2>\n

\"Henrietta<\/a>Leavitt is a high performance computing cluster (HPCC) named\u00a0in honor of Henrietta Swan Leavitt<\/a>\u00a0(left), an\u00a0<\/span>American\u00a0astronomer whose discoveries at the turn of the 20th Century helped shape our understanding of our\u00a0expanding universe.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Originally constructed at Bates in the fall of 2016 with the support of startup funds from Professors Jeffrey Oishi and Aleksandar Diamond-Stanic<\/a>, Leavitt has been designed as a community-based resource to support the curricular and scholarly needs of all Bates faculty, students, and staff. The original system was replaced during the summer of 2023 with funds from the Dean of Faculty, Information and Library Services, and the Digital and Computational Studies Program.<\/p>\n

As of Fall 2023, Leavitt\u00a0 consists of 9 compute nodes each with dual AMD EPYC processors with a total of 1152 cores, plus an enhanced GPU node running 2 NVIDIA Ampere Core GPUs. The cluster runs a variation of Linux CentOS 8.x and uses the Bright Cluster Management System.
