Applications received after our deadline will only be considered if we still have hiring needs after all initial applicants have received full consideration.\u00a0 Apply through Handshake, or on our website at this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/student-academic-support-center\/employment\/\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">When do interviews take place?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>Interviews begin in March.  After the March 1st application deadline, we will reach out with instructions on how to sign up for a slot.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Do I need written recommendations?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>You <strong>do not<\/strong> need a written recommendation.&nbsp; We ask you to provide the name(s) of 1-2 faculty or staff members that can speak to your qualifications. They <strong>will not<\/strong> have to write a letter, but we may contact them for feedback.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Do you give hiring preference to people who have formal tutoring experience?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>No! We provide on-the-job training to all employees.\u00a0 We expect you to arrive with content knowledge based upon your previous course work.\u00a0 We provide training to help you build the skills to become an effective tutor.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Must I attend training?\u00a0<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>All tutors are required to participate in regular training sessions throughout each academic year. Tutors are <strong>paid<\/strong> to attend such meetings. Tutors in their first year of work must also participate in bi-weekly training for new tutors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Must I have received an A in a course to tutor it?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>No.&nbsp; SASC tutors are not experts, rather they are individuals with a high degree of empathy and are great communicators. SASC tutors possess knowledge of the relevant content but also have direct experience in overcoming the challenges of adjusting to learning at the college level. We are looking for students who can share learning strategies specific to the courses they support.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">What kinds of courses do you hire tutors to support?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>We support many introductory-level and some intermediate-level courses in Biology, Chemistry, DCS, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Music Theory,\u00a0 Introduction to Logic (PHIL), Comparative Politics, and Statistics across the curriculum (Bio, Econ, Math, Psych, Pol, &amp; Soc).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">How many courses do I need to tutor?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>In most cases, we look to hire people who can tutor two or more courses.&nbsp; For example, general math tutors need to be able to tutor Calc I and II <em>as well<\/em> as at least one 200-level math course.&nbsp; Similarly, Chem tutors need to support <em>both<\/em> semesters of intro chem and\/or <em>both<\/em> semesters of organic chem. Exceptions include tutoring for music theory and some discipline-specific statistics courses.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Can I apply to be a tutor if I\u2019m currently studying off-campus?  Or, what if I plan to be abroad in the upcoming Fall term?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>Yes, please do!&nbsp; If you are currently studying abroad, we are happy to arrange a Zoom interview.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you plan to study abroad in the upcoming Fall term, we encourage you to apply and interview <em>prior<\/em> to your semester away.
