This year&#8217;s theme is devoted to the work we do training students to provide peer-led academic support particularly for STEM and QR.  While this is the annual meeting for NECQL, we extend an open invitation to anyone who works to administer an academic support center in the Northeast and beyond!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 NECQL meeting is co-sponsored by the Dean of Faculty\/Vice President of Academic Affairs at Bates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  is-style-dark-gray\" id=\"a98f170b-bdba-4cc6-a5d1-188c92d99999\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"a98f170b-bdba-4cc6-a5d1-188c92d99999\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Registration<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"a98f170b-bdba-4cc6-a5d1-188c92d99999\">\n<p>This year&#8217;s meeting includes a registration fee of $100. All attendees of the Summit are invited to submit a presentation proposal, you do not need to be a member of NECQL, nor do you need to have many years of experience in your current role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Session Formats:<\/strong> We anticipate having a variety of sessions throughout the 2-day conference in any\/all of the following formats:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Interactive Workshops<\/strong> (~55 min)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Presentations<\/strong> (~25-55 min)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lightning Presentations<\/strong> (15-min each)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poster Session<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Round Table Discussions <\/strong>(~25-55 min)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cFour Corners Debate on CRLA\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; conference organizers plan to facilitate a debate (of sorts) on the pros and cons of CRLA certification.&nbsp; We seek 2-4 people occupying both sides of the debate who are willing to give a 3-5 minute argument on why they are in favor or are opposed to using CRLA certification at their institution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We welcome other round table discussion ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Panel Discussions <\/strong>(~25-55 min)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are unsure as to whether or not your topic idea is appropriate, we encourage you to submit anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are interested in presenting but are still looking for topic ideas contact us at sasc@bates.edu.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  is-style-dark-gray\" id=\"45ddf60d-3d07-48c9-87ec-80a45620e48d\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"45ddf60d-3d07-48c9-87ec-80a45620e48d\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Highlighted Sessions<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"45ddf60d-3d07-48c9-87ec-80a45620e48d\">\n<p><strong>I. &#8220;Thinking with Things&#8221; Keynote Workshop by Sarah Kuhn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are excited to announce that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkingwiththings.com\/about\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.thinkingwiththings.com\/about\">Sarah Kuhn<\/a>, Professor Emerita at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, will facilitate the <em>Keynote Workshop<\/em> on Saturday April 12.&nbsp; Sarah is a proponent of thinking and learning through employing not only our minds, but also through using our hands and bodies. In her book <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Transforming-Learning-Through-Tangible-Instruction-The-Case-for-Thinking-With-Things\/Kuhn\/p\/book\/9780367653538\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Transforming-Learning-Through-Tangible-Instruction-The-Case-for-Thinking-With-Things\/Kuhn\/p\/book\/9780367653538\">Transforming Learning Through Tangible Instruction: The Case for Thinking With Things<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, Sarah makes the case for using physical materials\/manipulatives as part of the active learning process. Sarah will facilitate a workshop inviting us to <em>think with things<\/em> as we consider how we structure and conduct our tutor training sessions. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>II. &#8220;Mapping the Tutoring Training Curriculum&#8221; Poster Session<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tutor training curriculum differs from one institution to the next depending upon a variety of factors.&nbsp; As such, the conference organizers plan to host a &#8220;Mapping the Tutoring Training Curriculum&#8221; Poster Session.&nbsp; We would love for each institution in attendance to provide an outline of their tutor training curriculum in the form of a <strong>poster<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These posters will provide holistic snapshots for all attendees to see multiple models for training that align with program resources and the associated institutional culture.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No abstract is necessary. &nbsp; If presenting the training curriculum poster is all you plan to present then you do not need to complete the proposal form, but expect the conference organizers to reach out to verify your plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>III. \u201cFour Corners Debate on CRLA Certification\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some institutions devote considerable time to aligning with CRLA certification standards while others do not. We plan to facilitate a debate (of sorts) on the pros and cons of CRLA certification. We seek 2-4 people occupying opposite sides of the debate who are willing to give a 3-5 minute argument on why they are in favor or are opposed to using CRLA certification at their institution. It\u2019s on the Androscoggin River, about 40 miles north of Portland and a 2 hours 20 minute drive north of Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/map\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/map\">campus map<\/a> may be configured to show electric car charging stations and accessible parking. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All sessions, except lunch on Saturday, will be held in <strong>Dana Hal<\/strong>l.&nbsp; Participants can pick up their welcome packet and enjoy a continental breakfast on Saturday 4\/12 on the ground floor of Dana Hall accessed via the entrance along Alumni Walk. Dana is highlighted in purple on the map below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Driving<\/strong><br>You may park in any faculty\/staff or visitor parking area. Faculty\/staff spots are open to visitors during the weekend. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/mdot\/transit\/thelap\/schedule\/indextest.shtml\">LAP Commuter Bus<\/a> links Portland and Lewiston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/portlandjetport.org\/ground-transportation\">Ground transportation<\/a> from the Portland area is available via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandjetport.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/taxi_rates_6_09_v1.pdf\">taxi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandjetport.org\/Ground_Transportation\">rental car<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandjetport.org\/Car_Services\">private van\/car<\/a>&nbsp;or <a href=\"https:\/\/locations.greyhound.com\/\">bus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  is-style-dark-garnet\" id=\"fcd0f66c-3ee6-4323-992f-a9b7706d77c2\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fcd0f66c-3ee6-4323-992f-a9b7706d77c2\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">What is NECQL?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"fcd0f66c-3ee6-4323-992f-a9b7706d77c2\">\n<p>NECQL stands for the Northeast Consortium for Quantitative Literacy &#8212; this organization was founded&nbsp; in the late 90s by a collection of faculty across many disciplines to focus on practices and research associated with promotion of quantitative literacy (also known as numeracy) across the curriculum.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NECQL became a nexus in the northeast for many of us at small liberal arts colleges and community colleges in New England and New York who worked in isolation to run math\/stem\/quantitative support centers.
