Welcome Class of 2022!


I am Peter Nadel, the Student Employment Office (SEO) Coordinator this summer and I am writing to tell you about the student employment process at Bates. First of all, having an on-campus job has been (and continues to be) an amazing experience. Not only did I get some extra spending money, I was also able to learn valuable life skills. For example, while working at Commons (Dining facility), I was taught safe and efficient knife techniques, something that I couldn’t have learned anywhere else on campus. My roommate, with his on-campus job in Advancement (Fundraising), took on a fundraising project where he learned the fundamentals of conducting surveys and interviews. Two of my closest friends worked as Junior Advisors on dorm floors across campus, and now, with the leadership experience gained from that job, help the Housing Office supervise the running of whole dorms. Everyone who I have met who has had a job on campus has gained a valuable appreciation for the work that it takes to keep a college like Bates running.

To get started, simply go to Handshake by logging in with your Bates username and password. (Please do NOT to make a new account. If you are having trouble, call the Bates Career Development Center at (207) 786-6232.) After landing in the “For You” section, click on the “Jobs” tab, and then filter these jobs by clicking on “On-Campus” below the search bar. This will show you a list of all of the active jobs on-campus. Don’t worry if there seems like there aren’t a lot over the summer. Many departments are still in the process of updating and adding positions and listings.
