{"id":3915,"date":"2021-11-23T13:54:52","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T13:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/theater-dance\/?page_id=3915"},"modified":"2023-11-27T10:24:03","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:24:03","slug":"theater-and-dance-season","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/theater-dance\/theater-and-dance-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Theater and Dance Season"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to the 2021-22 Theater and Dance Season at Bates College and to once again gathering together to experience live theater and dance!&nbsp; We\u2019re grateful to be delving into these incredible stories by these incredible writers and composers.&nbsp; We\u2019re also thrilled to be able to collaborate with several professional guest artists throughout the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting off the Theater Season, <strong>Professor Cliff Odle<\/strong>, making his directorial debut at Bates, brings us <strong><em>Luck of the Irish<\/em> <\/strong>by Boston playwright Kirstin Greenidge.&nbsp; Professional actress <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/u\/destini-stewart\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Destini Stewart<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>and Dialect Coach <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charleslinshaw.com\/dialect-coach\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Charles Linshaw<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>join the creative team.&nbsp; <strong>Olivia Dimond (\u201822)<\/strong> directs Gina Gionfriddo\u2019s \u201cintensely smart, immensely funny\u201d <strong><em>Rapture, Blister Burn<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>as part of her Honors Thesis in Directing.&nbsp; In a first for the Department, <strong>Noah Pott (\u201922)<\/strong> is both directing and musical directing <strong><em>35mm-A Musical Exhibition<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>with music and lyrics by Ryan Scott Oliver,<em> <\/em>in part fulfilment of his joint Theater and Music thesis.&nbsp; Last, <strong>Professor Tim Dugan<\/strong> in collaboration with Affiliated Artist, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.figures.org\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Figures of Speech Theatre<\/strong><\/a>, and with guest artist and professional set designer, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marielasterdesign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Marie Laster<\/strong><\/a>, directs Anne Carson\u2019s<em> <\/em><strong><em>Antigonick<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Dance Season<\/strong>&nbsp;begins with th<strong>e Back to Bates Concert<\/strong>&nbsp;featuring an eclectic mix of performances, independent choreographers, alumni and the First Year Piece choreographed by senior&nbsp;dance&nbsp;majors. The Fall semester concludes with&nbsp; the&nbsp;<strong>Marcy Plavin Fall Concert<\/strong>, a showcase of the work by faculty&nbsp;<strong>Brian J Evans<\/strong>&nbsp;and guest artists&nbsp;<strong>Cameron McKinney<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Noelle Price&nbsp;<\/strong>working with the Dance Repertory and Repertory Styles courses, performances by the Flamenco teacher,&nbsp;<strong>Lindsey Bourassa<\/strong>, and by Visiting Assistant Professor&nbsp;<strong>Maho Ishiguro<\/strong>&nbsp;performing Indonesian Dance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the cold of winter we take Bates Dance to downtown&nbsp;Lewiston with&nbsp;<strong>FAB 17<\/strong>&nbsp;at the Gendron Center, presenting works by students, faculty and a wide range of&nbsp; Maine dance artists. Spring semester culminates in the&nbsp;<strong>Spring Dance Concert<\/strong>&nbsp;weekend featuring student choreography. This&nbsp;concert is usually 14-17 pieces made by three levels of composition courses, DANC 251, 351 or 360, and thesis. This concert includes volunteer dancers who have committed to rehearsals with the choreographers in those courses, plus lighting designers in THEA 232, sound designers in MUS 223, and student stage managers, sound\/light board operators, and run crews. The total of students involved is often 70+ contributors.
