{"id":3995,"date":"2022-07-28T16:03:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-28T20:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/theater-dance\/?page_id=3995"},"modified":"2023-11-27T10:24:02","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:24:02","slug":"22-23-season","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/theater-dance\/22-23-season\/","title":{"rendered":"2022-23 Season"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Welcome to the 2022-23 Theater and Dance Season at Bates College and to once again gathering together to experience live theater and dance!&nbsp; We\u2019re grateful to be delving into these incredible creative projects by these wonderful writers, makers and choreographers.&nbsp; We\u2019re also thrilled to be able to collaborate with several professional guest artists throughout the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;season starts off with&nbsp;<em>Hurricane Diane<\/em>, directed by&nbsp;<strong>Kush Sharma &#8217;23<\/strong>&nbsp;as part of an honors thesis in directing.&nbsp;In this Obie-winning comedy with a twist, Pulitzer Prize finalist Madeleine George pens a hilarious evisceration of the blind eye we all turn to climate change and the bacchanalian catharsis that awaits us, even in our own backyards. The department is pleased to then welcome <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ananyadancetheatre.org\/\">Ananya Dance Theater<\/a><\/strong> for their performance of <em>Dastak: I Wish You Me<\/em>, in partnership with the <strong>Bates Dance Festival.<\/strong> <em>Dastak <\/em>is a meditation on borders, loss, belonging, home, and liberation. Structured through four elemental journeys, Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. Up next we have the&nbsp;<em>Marcy Plavin Fall Dance Concert,&nbsp;<\/em>marking the culmination of the Dance Repertory &amp; Repertory Styles courses. This concert will feature an independent study work by<strong> Maya Golden &#8217;23<\/strong>, and works from faculty and nationally renowned repertory artists including&nbsp;<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lindseybourassa.com\/flamenco-artist-bio\" target=\"_blank\">Lindsey Bourassa<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ananyadancetheatre.org\/bios\/ananya-chatterjea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Ananya&nbsp;Chatterjea<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tristankoepke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tristan Koepke<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strong-movement.com\/the-strongmovement-team\/darrius-strong\/\">Darrius Strong<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spring, hilarity abounds with&nbsp;<em>Much Ado About Nothing&nbsp;<\/em>directed by&nbsp;<strong>Professor Tim Dugan<\/strong><em>.<\/em>&nbsp;Shakespeare offers us witty wordplay that dazzles and a raucous celebration that uplifts!&nbsp;Professional set designer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/theater\/faculty\/gailen-judy\/\"><strong>Judy Gailen<\/strong>,<\/a> and sound designer,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundmindsdesign.com\/\">Charles Coes<\/a>,<\/strong> join us as guest artists.   Thesis students <strong>Lucie Green &#8217;23 (Stage Management)<\/strong> and <strong>Diana Zhou &#8217;23 (Dramaturgy)<\/strong> will be part of the creative team.  Our season ends with the aptly named&nbsp;<em>Spring Dance Concert<\/em>, which catapults&nbsp;student artists&#8217;&nbsp;work on to the stage.&nbsp;The thesis work of Dance Majors\u2019 Thesis and Independent Studies are showcased in a fully supported production on Schaeffer stage. Student artists engage with three to four repertory artists through out the Fall and each repertory artist\u2019s diverse way of moving and creating art empower student artists to expand their definition of dance as a powerful mode of artistic expression. The two-week process are quick in nature and steeped in knowledge.
