To the Sea and the Sun is a work of devised theater developed, written, designed, and performed by Miguel Ángel Pacheco (2024) and co-written and directed by Dr. Liz Phillips (Dept. of Theater and Dance). The performance is a live, interactive exploration of Wassily Kandinsky’s 1922 painting of the same name. Scored to the ronroco music of South America and adapted poems from Kandinsky’s little-known collection Sounds, Pacheco moves with athletic precision through the vibrantly colored and imaginative world of the painting using techniques from clown, circus, physical theater, and dance. To the Sea and the Sun is a meditation on the universality and unity of the arts, transnational identity, and the joy and pain of kinesthetic and visual expressivity. Performance running time: 25 minutes. Two nights only; free; limited seating available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
