Update on the Bates Fund
Bates’ monthly newsletter for fundraising volunteers.
December 2011 Edition
“And the Eighth President of Bates College Is…”
Bates witnessed an historic event this past Sunday when the Board of Trustees announced Clayton Spencer as the eighth president of the college. Over 1,000 members of the community gathered in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building to receive the news. For the first time in Bates history, the presidential announcement was viewable via webcast. Over 1,000 people viewed the announcement online from seventeen countries.
President-elect Spencer begins her duties on July 1st, 2012. We look forward to sharing more information about her presidency throughout the winter and spring. Click here to read more about Clayton Spencer, including photos and video from Sunday’s announcement.
Where We Stand
Our sincere thanks to everyone who has already made their commitment to the Bates Fund this year. As Bates Fund volunteers, making your gift or pledge early in the year helps you ask your peers to make their gift with confidence! Remember that pledges can be paid through June 30. We hope that we can announce 100% volunteer participation for each group by the end of December.
To receive a 2011 calendar-year tax deduction, please visit the online giving site or call 1-888-522-8371 before midnight on December 31.
An Opportunity for Alumni Age 70+
From now through December 31, those age 70+ may make a tax-smart gift to Bates by taking advantage of the IRA Charitable Roll-Over, a provision that allows you to direct up to $100,000 of your required minimum distributions to be directed to charity.
Bates Fund Volunteer Center
A website made specifically for you, the Bates Fund Volunteers, debuted in November and can be found at https://www.bates.edu/volunteer/. While much content is still to be developed, “the Center” already has quite a bit of useful information, such as:
Please visit the site and let us know what you think. What else would be helpful? What’s not clear? etc. Send your ideas, thoughts, criticisms and questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Garnet Gateway Volunteer Fundraising System
The Garnet Gateway system, also known as “the online tool,” is used by Bates Fund volunteers to manage their assignments, track progress, stay on top of next steps, and report results to the college. First time users will be mailed instructions, along with their User ID and a temporary PIN. To get to the online tool, just go to the bottom right of any Bates.edu page and you will find a link to the Garnet Gateway (second column from the right, last item in the column) or go to https://www.bates.edu/garnet-gateway/. If you have forgotten your User ID or PIN, call (207-786-8222) or email (Helpdesk@bates.edu) the Bates Help Desk. Good news: in the not-too-distant future the “forgot my User ID / PIN” process will be automated.
The Class Agent program is blazing! Over eighty new Class Agents have been added in the past few weeks, thanks especially to the tremendous work of John Ducker ’91. We have also introduced a new role and now have seven “Community Builders” to-date. On a results basis, we are pretty close to our November dollar goal, but participation is lagging. We need your help in making December a big month and getting us back on track! Finally, save the date for the first Boston Regional Volunteers Event on January 12, designed to bring regional Bates Fund volunteers together to meet the rest of the team, discuss topics of mutual concern, hear the latest about what’s happening at Bates, and share tips and best practices.
Don’t forget to stop by the Bates Fund Volunteer Center for some helpful tips!
Parents Fund Committee members are in full-gear calling donors, and the Parents Fund Committee continues to recruit members. Beginning November 7, student callers began soliciting parents.
The BOLD classes have had a busy December choosing solicitation assignments and getting ready to make calls over the next two months! Thank you to everyone for taking time to select your assignments and for asking great questions as the calling season begins. Keep in mind, only three months away until MARCH MANIA, where we will once again compete for young alumni participation numbers with other NESCAC schools.
Also a special shout-out to the Class of 2007, who have already raised an incredible $15,649 in pledges for their 5th Reunion! Amazing work by all of the volunteers and by the classmates who have stepped up to stretch their giving on behalf of Bates.
We continue to build excitement toward June 8-10! Committees continue to grow as they call classmates to help out. Student callers began calling Reunion classes November 14.
