Bates Fund Continues to Show Improvement

An Opportunity for Alumni Age 70+

From now through December 31, those age 70+ may make a tax-smart gift to Bates by taking advantage of the IRA Charitable Roll-Over, a provision that allows you to direct up to $100,000 of your required minimum distributions to be directed to charity. Contact Erin Martin, Bates Director of Gift Planning, at 207-786-8373 or for details.

Bates Fund Volunteer Center Debuts

A website made specifically for you, the Bates Fund Volunteers, debuted on November 1 and can be found at While much content is still to be developed, “the Center” already has quite a bit of useful information, such as:

Please visit the site and let us know what you think. What else would be helpful? What’s not clear? etc. Send your ideas, thoughts, criticisms and questions to Steve Mortimer,

Garnet Gateway Volunteer Fundraising System

The Garnet Gateway system, also known as “the online tool” is used by Bates Fund volunteers to manage their assignments, track progress, stay on top of next steps, and report results to the college. First time users will be mailed instructions, along with their User ID and a temporary PIN. To get to the online tool, just go to the bottom right of any page and you will find a link to the Garnet Gateway (second column from the right, last item in the column) or go to If you have forgotten your User ID or PIN, call (207-786-8222) or email ( the Bates Help Desk. Good news: in the not-too-distant future the “forgot my User ID / PIN” process will be automated.

Class Agents

As noted above, we have begun creating training videos and placing them on the Bates Fund Volunteer Centersite. We are also planning regional “community building” events for Bates Fund volunteers, with details coming soon. The Decade Co-Captains are in the process of contacting last year’s Class Agents to determine whether they plan to continue as a Class Agent, are willing to take on additional assignments, would prefer to become a “Community Builder”, or wish to take a break. Our goal is to complete this before Thanksgiving, then finalize assignments and turn on the Garnet Gateway online system.

Parents Fund

Parents Fund Committee members are in full-gear calling donors, and the Parents Fund Committee continues to recruit members. Beginning November 7, student callers began soliciting parents.

Thank you to all of the BOLD Lead Agents for their hard work over the past few weeks! Every class is getting ready to confirm solicitation assignments, and BOLD class agents will begin contacting classmates at the end of November. With twenty new agents this year, it is inspiring to report the number of young alumni excited about giving back to Bates as volunteers.

Reunion 2012

We continue to build excitement toward June 8-10!  Committees continue to grow as they call classmates to help out.  Student callers will begin calling Reunion classes November 14.
