Latest NewsBobcats wrap up wacky NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships 3/21/2009
MINNEAPOLIS -- Bates College sophomore Charlotte Green finished 17th in the 100-yard freestyle and junior Katelyn Drake placed 21st in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday as an eventful NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships concluded for Bates at the University of Minnesota. As a team, Bates scored 22 points at the meet, good for 29th place out of 58 scoring teams. But Saturday's events were a bit anticlimatic following a unexpectedly crazy chain of events involving Bates senior diver Kelsey Lamdin (Brunswick, Maine) on Friday. During warmups before Lamdin finished 10th on Friday in the 1-meter diving competition, she "accidentally hit her head and hands on the board on her way down from a dive," according to a story on CollegeSwimming.com. Lamdin was brought to the University Medical Center on the University of Minnesota campus, where the meet is being held. Upon entering, the article continues, "Lamdin and Bates diving coach Mike Bartley informed the Emergency Room staff that they had a competition they needed to get back to and to hurry up. The medical staff got Lamdin in and out of the ER in a record time of under an hour. Lamdin ended up receiving fifteen staples in her head as a result of the injury. When Lamdin arrived back at the University Aquatics Center, she had just five minutes to prepare herself for the final dives of her career." Bates head coach Peter Casares told the website that "'throughout her career here, when it came time to compete, Kelsey was always ready. This is her, through and through.' "Lamdin is doing fine tonight as of the one-meter diving finals," the article continues. "She said that it 'felt like when you hit your head coming out of a car. It doesn’t hurt that bad.' When asked what got her through this, Lamdin added, 'I’ve worked four years for this. This is what it’s all about.'"
Two days after placing sixth in the 3-meter diving competition, Lamdin placed 10th in the 1-meter competition, scoring 388.45 points. Only the top eight scorers moved on to the finals in the event, but the top 16 can call themselves All-American, which Lamdin now has in all eight of her opportunities as a Bobcat. In terms of All-America plaudits, Lamdin is now Bates' most decorated diver ever. Drake, meanwhile, swam the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 57.52 seconds in the preliminaries, breaking her own Bates record in the event, set on Feb. 7, by 0.16 seconds. Drake's time was 16th best in the field of 42 competitors, giving her the final spot in Friday night's consolation final, where her time of 57.87 seconds gave her 15th place overall in the event. Wednesday and Thursday Recap Green was the lone competitor from the three-athlete Bates contingent Thursday at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. Green, competing at her first NCAA meet, finished 45th out of 60 competitors in preliminaries in the 200-yard freestyle event, timing in at 1:55.24. On Wednesday, Lamdin won her seventh career All-America honors, finishing sixth in the 3-meter diving competition. Lamdin scored 419.30 points in the preliminary round, sixth best out of 22 competitors, to qualify for the eight-diver finals field. In the finals she scored 416.55 points to officially place sixth, duplicating her finish at 3 meters in 2006. Also competing for Bates on the first day of NCAAs were Green in the 50-yard freestyle and Drake in the 200-yard individual medley. Green placed 46th out of 60 competitors in her event, with a time of 24.44 seconds, while Drake finished 51st out of 56 competitors in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:11.20.
