2021 Summer Projects

Bates Athletics announces $1 million in facility enhancements to be completed by Fall 2021

Bates Athletics will complete four facility-enhancement projects this summer, announced Director of Athletics Jason Fein.

Students returning to campus in August will have access to a renovated Davis Fitness Center and weight room; vastly improved locker rooms in Underhill Arena for varsity lacrosse and football; and new Mondo floor in the historic Gray Athletic Building.

In addition, Bates Athletics will install a state-of-the-art, AI-driven video and analytics system at the Wallach Tennis Center and in Merrill Gymnasium for the varsity tennis teams.

“All of these projects continue our steady progress of enhancing not only the student-athlete experience but also recreational, fitness and wellness opportunities for all Bates students,” said Fein.

The projects will be funded through donors gifts and college spending, he added.

“These improvements are just the beginning. We continue to actively engage with our fabulous Bobcat supporters and share with them the importance of giving our student-athletes the best possible experience in their time at Bates. Investments in their success will continue to elevate the experiences and opportunities for all Bates students and Bobcat student-athletes.”

Davis Fitness Center

Underhill Arena, home of Davis Fitness Center, was transformed into the college’s COVID-19 Testing Center during 2020–21, necessitating the move of fitness center to Merrill Gym on a temporary basis.

”This gave us a golden opportunity to plan for significant upgrades to Davis,” said Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Recreation Scott Lehmann.

Upgrades include new performance racks, weights, selectorized machines, plate-loaded machines, and cardio equipment. A new equipment layout will make the space more functional, comfortable and user-focused. A new floor and updated branding will complete the new look for students returning in August.

"We're very excited about the updates,” said Mike Seltzer, Bates head strength and conditioning coach. “The new layout and new equipment will greatly improve our ability to provide a highly competitive strength and conditioning experience for our student athletes."

The physical upgrades are matched by Bates Athletics’ commitment to ensuring an inclusive and accessible fitness environment for all students.

“We have received positive and constructive feedback from students over the past few years and believe that our students will be excited by what they see and experience in this very important Bates space,” said Lehmann.

Some new and upgraded technology and furniture, as well as branding for the space, will round out the renovation.

Merrill Gym will also see the addition of 20 new pieces of cardio equipment including ellipticals, Assault Fitness AirRunners, and recumbent and upright bikes.

Underhill Arena Locker Rooms

The locker rooms for football and women’s and men’s lacrosse will receive a makeover this summer thanks to a generous gift in memory of Taylor F. Clark P ’13, P ’19, P ’21 by the Clark family.

“We very much appreciate the Clark family’s partnership in helping Bates Athletics ensure that our teams have spaces that foster a positive team culture and pride and enhance the student-athlete and recruiting experience,” said Fein.

The project will create open, comfortable spaces for student-athletes to prepare for practices and competitions in a more functional, modern aesthetic.

Community is built in many places at Bates,” said head football coach Malik Hall. “Now student-athletes will be able to enjoy community and camaraderie in our new locker room.

The renovation will feature:

  • New Mondo flooring throughout the space, including the hallway, visitors’ locker room, and the adjacent sports medicine facility.
  • New wooden lockers from Legends Lockers.
  • Reimagined layout promoting more team interaction and offering more social space while retaining current player capacity.
  • Technology improvements including flat screen TVs, a new sound system, and device charging stations.

“Our students and coaches are very excited about the upcoming locker room renovations,” said head men’s lacrosse coach Peter Lasagna. “A locker room is where you should feel pride, positivity, and camaraderie. It’s a place where students should look forward to being together. This renovation helps build pride, improves function, and makes a statement of commitment to our program by the generous donors.”

"The locker room renovation solidifies the commitment of the Clark family and Bates to the social and physical development of the student-athletes in our program,” said head women’s lacrosse coach Brett Allen. “The values of our team culture are reinforced daily during the time the team spends together in a shared social space. Being in a space that will cement that commitment and our team values is critical to the athletic experience and any future successes we achieve. Thank you!"

Gray Athletic Building

A useful surface since its installation in 1991 as part of renovations of Gray Athletic Building as a multipurpose athletic and event space, the existing poured urethane floor will be replaced over the summer with a Mondo Advance Vulcanized rubber floor

This new surface will withstand the demands of the variety of activities that take place in the Gray Cage from athletic practices, intramurals and club sports to concerts and other campus events.

A two-tone gray floor — lighter gray for the court spaces and darker for the perimeter — will be lined for a variety of sports uses: basketball, volleyball, and badminton/pickleball.

“The Gray Cage is such a valuable space on the Bates campus for many different groups and functions,” said head baseball coach Jon Martin. “During the harsh winter months, it is used consistently for both baseball and softball as we train for the upcoming spring seasons. These necessary improvements will enhance the experience for all students for years to come.”

In addition, the baseball and softball batting cages will be replaced with fully retractable 72-foot cages from field and facility specialists 78 Sports and relocated to a side-by-side configuration along the south wall to minimize disruption to other activities.

"The improvements to the Gray Cage will help us maximize our time when we're not able to get outside,” said head softball coach McKell Barnes. “The new batting cages allow for more convenience with easier setup and breakdown. The new floor will hopefully simulate fielding ground balls better than the old one did. This is important for timing and rhythm when going into field motion. We're excited and looking forward to the space upgrades."

PlaySight Installation

Come August, thanks to supporters of the Bobcat men’s and women’s tennis programs, the teams will have access to state-of-the-art PlaySight Interactive technology at the Wallach Tennis Center and Merrill Gymnasium.

In wide use worldwide, PlaySight leverages artificial intelligence and connected video cameras to track strokes, ball trajectory, player movement, and shot speed and spin. Through a courtside kiosk and on tablets and mobile devices, players and coaches will have instant multi-angle video and detailed statistics. Cloud recording provides on-demand video access of practices and competitions for coaches and athletes alike.

In addition, the setup (a camera at each of Wallach’s eight courts and Merrill’s four courts) will allow private live streaming of tennis matches

“PlaySight will be an awesome addition to the Bates tennis programs,” said tennis player Victoria Scott '23 of Edgartown, Mass. “Being able to rewatch practice matches will give me a better insight into my own game and match strategy. I’m hoping that this resource will allow me to better visualize my most effective point plays going into other matches.”

Head men’s and women’s tennis coach Paul Gastonguay ’89 believes this new system will empower his student-athletes to take charge of their own development.

“The video-review process will enable us to improve tactics, body language and our 'compete-mode; from match to match," he said. "Each student-athlete will also be able to review their individual workouts on their phone or computer which will help them visualize a concept or technique.”

In addition, the program is excited to be able to stream all home matches and tournaments moving forward.

“I love that our student-athletes’ parents and our alumni will be able to watch our matches from around the world,” said Gastonguay. “When students choose Bates tennis, they know they will be able to compete in front of their families no matter where they are from which will enhance the student athlete’s as well as their family‘s experience.”

“I am so grateful for the generosity of the donors for all gifts that have made this project possible. Thank you for making this dream a reality for our teams.”
