How do I connect to a Network Server from on-campus to access network/departmental files? 

Connecting to a Network File Server from On-Campus*

Microsoft Windows Vista/7/8:

  • Connecting to a File Server
    • Click the Start button
    • In the Search field type: \\belfast, \\china, \\denmark, etc.

  • If you are prompted for your Bates username and password
    • At the login windowtype:
      • Username: bcis\username (bcis\bbobcat)
      • Password: Your Bates Network Password

    • Check the box labeled Remember My Credentials

  • Click Ok
  • Double click on Departments or the Folder you want to Access
    • Continue to navigate to the Network Folder until you have reached the location you want to access

Microsoft Windows 10:

  • Connecting to a File Server
    • Right click the Start button and click on Run
    • In the Open field, Type: \\belfast, \\china, \\denmark, etc.

  • If you are prompted for your Bates username and password
    • At the login windowtype:
      • Username: bcis\username (bcis\bbobcat)
      • Password: Your Bates Network Password

    • Check the box labeled Remember My Credentials

  • Click Ok
  • Double click on Departments or the Folder you want to Access
    • Continue to navigate to the Network Folder until you have reached the location you want to access

Mac OSX:

  • From the Finder menu, click on Go
  • Click on Connect to Server…
  • In the Server Address field, type smb://servername
    • (servername = belfast, china, denmark, etc.)

  • Click on the Connect button
    • If you are prompted for your Bates username and password
      • At the login windowtype:
        • Username: bcis\username (bcis\bbobcat)
        • Password: Your Bates Network Password

      • Check the box to save your password to your Keychain

  • Double click on Departments or the Folder you want to Access
    • Continue to navigate to the Network Folder until you have reached the location you want to access

  • When you are finished utilizing the Network Folder, click and drag the server network share you have connected to and drag it to the Trash to eject it.
    • The server network share will typically be on your Desktop. It is sometimes labeled as Departments

*If you need to connect to the Belfast, China, or Denmark File Servers from Off-Campus, you must have a VPN installed that is provided by the Bates College IT Help Desk for Bates Owned Computers.
