Network File Storage General Information and Links
Below is a list of file servers provided by Information & Library Services for email, for secure network storage, and for web authoring. Data on these servers is backed up for secure storage (timing on back ups may differ by server). There are also task based servers provided as well, information on those servers can be obtained by contacting Help Desk Services.
ABACUS: for Personal Web pages
Personal web pages are hosted on the Abacus server using an Apache HTTP server. All personal web development can be done with any web development tool, although we recommend and support Dreamweaver at Bates College. Due to security issues, we cannot allow custom built cgi scripts. Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is highly recommended for all web authoring tools that require a Bates network username and password to complete the transfer. Please also consult: Dreamweaver Secure Site Configuration Setup. URL’s appear as: http://abacus.bates.edu/~username/filename.htm and are not searchable by either the Bates search engine or Google.
BELFAST: for administrative resources
The server named Belfast is where all shared files and resources of an administrative nature can be found. Certain departments have requested space on this server in order to provide a shared network resource for administrative purposes. Please view these suggestions for file management before using this server. It is strongly recommended to backup your files using this means of file storage for administrative work of the college.
CHINA: for academic resources
The server named China is where all shared files and resources of an academic nature can be found. Certain classes and departments have requested space on this server in order to provide a shared network resource for academic purposes. Please view these suggestions for file management before using this server. It is strongly recommended to backup your files using this means of file storage for academic research.
DENMARK: for software installation
Bates College has a site license for virus protection software, Sophos, that should be installed on all personally owned computers (installation, etc. helpsheets for Mac and Windows. To comply with licensing issues, there is very little other software that is available for personal installation at Bates College.
MEXICO: Bates Work is stored in a syncronized fashion from your computer to this server on a daily and offline basis. This is available for both Windows and Macintosh platforms. Faculty and staff should call Help Desk Services to arrange an appointment for the Macintosh installation and configuration.
PARIS: for personal file storage
All students, faculty and staff have space available to store personal files on the network server named Paris. Students have 100MB of storage space. The files can most easily be accessed by going through Paris, which is a server that allows you to view your files directly (no UNIX commands required!) You might think of it is a memory stick that follows you around campus on the network and is also available off campus, too. It is backed up nightly, so files may be recovered by contacting Help Desk Services for assistance. All network services at Bates College must be serviced at regular intervals, so there will be short periods of time when Paris will be unavailable. Please view these suggestions for file management before using this server.
PROXY: for accessing Library databases from off-campus
The proxy server is a separate web server which identifies you as an authorized Bates user when you’re connecting via a non-Bates internet service provider. When trying to access subscription-based online indexes, databases, and periodicals using an ISP other than Bates, the proxy server prompts you for your Bates ID and password, and allows you access whether you’re in Lewiston, Boston, or London.
