Brower to Present Muskie Lecture

Known to many as the godfather of the environmental movement, Brower served from 1952 to 1969 as the first executive director of the Sierra Club. During that time the organization grew from 2,000 to 77,000 members and became one of the nation's most influential voices for environmental protection. In 1969 he founded Friends of the Earth, which now operates in 53 countries.

Author Baxter to Read From His Works

Top Independent Films to be Screened at Bates

Some of 1995's best independent films and video works will get a rare Maine showing March 9 and 10 at Bates College when the acclaimed Black Maria Film Festival visits the campus. More than a dozen short films and videos will be screened in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall at 7 p.m. March 9 and at 2 p.m. March 10. Admission is $5 and tickets will be sold at the door.

Rhodes to lecture at Bates

Motivational speaker Sidney J. Rhodes Jr. will explore racism, violence, drug abuse and the mass media in a lecture at Bates College at 8 p.m. Monday (Feb. 26). Rhodes' talk, "Freedom or Destruction," is open to the public free of charge. It is sponsored by the Bates African-American student organization, Amandla.

Dale Bruning Trio to Perform at Bates

The innovative Dale Bruning Trio will present a jazz concert at Bates College on March 2 at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Concert Hall. The trio, composed of Bruning of Longmont, Colo., on guitar, Sam Sherry of Cape Elizabeth on bass and Steve Grover of Augusta, winner of the 1994 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz/BMI Jazz Composers Competition, on drums, will perform a variety of jazz standards as well as original compositions by Bruning.

Jazz Great Corea to Perform at Bates
