Annual Kendall Concert features Portland String Quartet

The Portland String Quartet will perform "The Art of Fugue" by J.S. Bach on the 250th anniversary of his death at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited to attend the annual Edith C. and Raymond L. Kendall Concert, and the reception that immediately follows in the Olin lobby, free of charge.

Theater at Bates to stage outdoor performances of "Smoke on the Mountain"

Theater at Bates will stage four performances of the bluegrass gospel musical "Smoke on the Mountain" at 7 p.m. May 19, at 2 and 7 p.m. May 20 and at 2 p.m. May 21 at the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater, overlooking Lake Andrews on the Bates College campus. In "The Hidden Ivies: Thirty Colleges of Excellence," Bates is lauded for its service-learning opportunities and its consistent ranking in the top 10 among all colleges in terms of student participation in international study. It notes that some two-thirds of Bates graduates earn graduate degrees, and includes this summary comment from an administrator on alumni survey findings: "For a college with a long-standing reputation in the sciences, we were surprised to discover we had more graduates whose title was 'entrepreneur,' having founded their own businesses, than graduates who were M.D.'s."

Bates to host State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament April 8

Seventy student teams from grades kindergarten through high school will compete at the day-long Maine State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at various sites on the Bates College campus. The 12 state champion teams that emerge from the tournament at Bates will go on to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind 2000 World Finals at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, May 31-June 3. The public is invited to attend the state tournament at Bates free of charge.

Walsh to deliver Founders Day Convocation address at Bates

Diana Chapman Walsh, the 12th president of Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass., will discuss "Living Our Stories Well" at noon, Monday, April 3, in Alumni Gymnasium as part of Bates' annual Founders Day Convocation, a time when the college reflects on the principles that were at its founding and continue to sustain it. The public is invited to attend the convocation without charge.

Bates safety and security teach area kids self-defense

Three members of the Bates College Office of Security and Campus Safety are teaching a program of self-defense to area 5 to 7 year olds and their parents at Smart Start Developmental Child Care Center in Auburn from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. through Feb. 25.
