With the wind and rain from Tropical Storm Irene long gone from Maine and New Hampshire, the college's Annual Entering Student Outdoor Program trips will depart from campus as scheduled on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

AESOP and Irene: 2 p.m. update to AESOP's response to the hurricane

As the scheduled departure date nears for Bates' 2011 AESOP trips, we are closely following weather advisories regarding Hurricane Irene, and will change plans if necessary to assure the safety of all students involved. Given the predicted pace of the storm, we currently anticipate that the trips will be able to leave campus on Tuesday, Aug. 30, as scheduled.

Fabled AESOP trips build first-year solidarity

Annual Entering Student Outdoor Program (AESOP) sends small groups of students hiking, camping, climbing, kayaking and canoeing across northern New England with the aim of helping the newbies make personal connections before classes start. This year's 80 leaders, working in pairs, will bring more than 250 first-years to destinations from Isle au Haut to Baxter State Park to Vermont's Long Trail.
