Innovation Grant

Using AI in Pedagogy, Operational Workflows, and Student Projects

This internal grant program supports faculty, staff, and students in exploring the use of artificial intelligence at Bates – in pedagogy, in campus operations, and in faculty-approved student projects related to a course.

While the majority of the funds are intended to support engaging with or about AI in the classroom, we encourage everyone – faculty, staff, and students – to think about ways that AI could be creatively used in campus operations. Experiments are encouraged, and failures can teach us as much as successes. Grants could provide small stipends tied to an AI initiative, hire students for AI-related or supported projects, purchase software licenses for individuals or entire classes, or other types of non-hardware support.

Individuals whose projects would occur in the fall semester should submit their proposals by August 1. Proposals for winter or spring 2027 projects will be accepted on a rolling basis until the funds are fully committed.

For more detailed guidelines on proposal submission and review, please contact Pat Schoknecht, Vice President for Information and Library Services.
