Submitting your Project to the IBC

For those interested in submitting a proposal, the Institutional Biosafety Committee will be meeting on an as needed basis to review applications and every three years for renewal applications.

The Biosafety Application can be found by clicking here and should be submitted for the following reviews:

Exempt experiments – a full application is requested to be filled out by the Faculty involved with the proposed project and submitted to the IBC.

Non-exempt experiments – a full application is requested to be filled out by the Faculty involved with the proposed project and submitted to the IBC.

Amendments to existing protocols – required immediately when there are any proposed changes to the following:

  1. Scope of work and/or Research Description
  2. Location and/or Contact/Personnel Information
  3. Ancillary Committee changes
  4. NIH Guideline changes
  5. Use of Infectious Materials, rDNA Construct, or Occupational Health Issues

Renewing existing protocols – required every 3 years after receiving approval from IBC.

Once an protocol application is received, the co-chairs will call a meeting with all IBC members to review the application materials. The IBC may ask for the proposer to join the initial discussion to give clarity and context on their research proposal. The IBC meeting will conduct a vote on whether the proposed project is approved or denied within Bates. A follow-up determination letter will be sent to the Faculty once the committee has voted.
