Office of Intercultural Education

Created in the summer of 2010, the purpose of the Office of Intercultural Education (or OIE) is to support the advancement of diversity and inclusion at Bates.

While the 2010/2011 academic year will be spent engaging the Bates community in a conversation about the long-term role and function of the OIE, the fundamental purpose of the office will be to coordinate academic, social, and residential programs for students from populations underrepresented in higher education, and to identify opportunities to connect all members of the Bates community in the essential work of bridging cultural differences in order to strengthen and enrich our lives. Lectures, workshops, cultural celebrations, and other OIE programs offer insight into ways that cultural imperatives shape our lives and understanding of each other. The office is located in Chase Hall and is open to the entire Bates community.
