About
Grace Gillies received a PhD from UCLA in 2018, and is currently a lecturer in Classical and Medieval Studies at Bates College. In the 2019-2020 academic year, they are teaching introductory and intermediate courses in Latin, the Roman history of the republic, and a course on ancient gender and sexuality. Previously, they have taught in Rome and Italy with Classics-oriented programs run by UCLA, the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies, and the Dorrance Scholarship Program.
Grace’s academic interests include the production of social space in ancient Roman cities, as well as Roman satire, social history, and invective. In addition, Grace works on ancient concepts of gender and sexuality, as discussed in their recent publication: “The Body in Question: Looking at Non-Binary Gender in the Greek and Roman World” (Eidolon, 2017). Currently, they are working on a book entitled Writing in the Street: the Development of the Urban Poetics of Roman Satire.
