Impact: Student Support, Home and Away

Ensuring that all aspects of Bates life are open to students, from study abroad to campus life, the Bates endowment supports the college’s mission to educate the whole person, fostering teamwork, leadership, and a sense of belonging.

Investing in Inclusion

Members of the campus community mingle, chat, listen, nosh, and hug during a welcome reception on Sept. 5, 2024, at the newly renamed Center for Belonging and Community in Chase Hall. The center was formerly named the Office of Intercultural Education (Theophil Syslo/Bates College)

Expanding Global Perspectives

Displayed at the 2017 Barlow Off-Campus Study Photography Exhibition, Bria Riggs ’18 took this photograph of a sunset in the Ecuadorian cloud forest while the environmental studies major was on the SIT Quito, Ecuador, program studying comparative ecology and conservation.

By the time they graduate, more than half of all Bates students will study abroad. Endowed support for off-campus study opportunities enable students to broaden their perspectives, apply classroom learning to real-world settings, and engage in transformative experiences.
